CSE professor Susan Jones awarded prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship

MINNEAPOLIS (04/10/2017) —  University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering Professor Susan D. Jones has been awarded a prestigious Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. The highly competitive, national fellowship is awarded annually to only about 175 scholars and artists selected from among more than 3,500 applicants.

Professor Jones, who has a joint appointment in the College of Science and Engineering and College of Biological Sciences, is a historian of science, medicine, and technology also trained in biology and veterinary medicine. A faculty member since 2005, she currently serves as director of the University’s History of Science, Technology, and Medicine Program.

Jones' research focuses on environment and disease, especially diseases common to wild and domestic animals as well as humans, integrating social, cultural and ecological evidence and concepts. She will use her Guggenheim Fellowship to work on a new book titled Plague Homelands: Disease and ‘Internal Colonization’ in the Eurasian Borderlands.

Jones is the author of several articles and two books, Valuing Animals: Veterinarians and their Patients in Modern America (2003) and Death in a Small Package: A Short History of Anthrax (2010). She has served on national and international boards and committees; has been invited to lecture in Vienna, Beijing and Cambridge; and has won awards from the U.S.-U.K. Fulbright Commission and the National Science Foundation.

Jones received her B.A. from Harvard/Radcliffe, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois, and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Professor Heidi Kitrosser in the University of Minnesota's Law School also received a 2017 Guggenheim Fellowship.
