Makeathon

The Makeathon will be a two-day event where UMN students will collaborate in teams to come up with a solution as well as a prototype. The 2023 Makeathon theme is Innovation in Healthcare. Solutions should relate to the following: waste reduction, new technology, and occupancy issues during a crisis.

Work in cross-disciplinary teams that must be made up of 3-5 students. Teams must represent at least two schools. Students may apply with a team or individually.


No prior experience is necessary. All are welcome! Prizes:  1st place- $500, 2nd place- $250, 3rd place- $100

MVP or  “Minimum Viable Product” is a tool to show customers and key stakeholders how your innovative idea could work, capture feedback, and bring your concept one step closer to reality.


Each year, the MVP Challenge awards up to 30 grants from $100 to $5,000 in three divisions:

MIN CORPS
Move your software or data solution closer to launch from sketching out your app to testing your early stage alpha.

Bring your idea to life by building a physical prototype from a "look-and-feel" model to a functional prototype.

Realize your vision for campus, community, or societal change through early testing of your impact solution.

TechStars Startup Weekend

The UMN Techstars Startup Weekend is the place to look for a team, create a prototype of your idea, validate your business idea, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs, all in one weekend! 


This event is a great place to connect with passionate people driven to build something new. There is no better place to meet new friends, colleagues, mentors, cofounders, and investors. Here, you can learn from experienced entrepreneurs, network with professionals, and gain knowledge about entrepreneurship.

Lab Services

CDES Computer Lab Services

The College of Design has multiple computer labs and classrooms in both Rapson Hall on the Minneapolis campus and McNeal Hall on the St. Paul campus for UMN students. The labs offer hardware capable of handling graphics-intensive design work and specialized design software. The combined locations provide students with access to high-quality color printers and plotters, a large format scanner, flatbed scanners, and a textile printer. For digital design review (DDR) purposes, the labs have a mobile setup that can be checked out by faculty and instructors.

U-Spatial collaborates with a variety of departments and centers, seeking to meet the fast-growing demand for core services such as the help desk and training, while creating new opportunities and synergies around spatial research, teaching, and service. The College of Design Fabrication Shops are open labs where students enrolled in a College of Design course have access to equipment and support to work on assigned projects. Our spaces include a woodshop, metal shop, digital fabrication tools, and a materials store.

The St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) is an interdisciplinary fluid mechanics research lab and educational facility under the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota. SAFL has expertise in fluid mechanics and collaboration across disciplines.

The Health Sciences Makerspace is located in the Health Sciences Education Center. The Makerspace provides equipment, materials, and tools that promote innovation and creativity. The space is free to all U of M Twin Cities faculty, students, and staff.
