Information sessions

Step-by-step instructions for scheduling a career event

The first step in planning your information session for University of Minnesota science and engineering students is to request an event in Handshake, our online recruiting database. Register by visiting the Handshake website.

Create your event

Handshake allows you to request an information session directly through the system. After logging into Handshake, select Create an Event from the home screen. You will be prompted to fill out the appropriate fields.

Once the event is created, you will receive a formal confirmation via email with the location of your event and other important details. We typically recommend hosting information sessions in the evening hours, anytime between 5-8 p.m.

Promote your event

One of the best ways to market your event to students is to ensure the information submitted in your information session request description is as thorough as possible. Students have many choices as to which information sessions they want to attend, particularly on the days surrounding a career fair. It is to your benefit to make sure the information you submit catches students’ attention.

To assist with marketing, we include all information sessions in our student newsletter that is sent to all CSE undergraduate students each week.

We highly encourage companies to do additional marketing on their end to increase the number of students at information sessions. You can also reach out to CSE student groups directly for promotional assistance. The full list of active groups is available on the CSE Student Groups web page.

Food

Students are more likely to attend information sessions when companies provide free food. Different catering options around campus will be included in confirmation materials.
