Let's Talk - Mental Health Counseling

Let’s Talk is a program that provides informal drop-in consultations at locations around campus for U of M students throughout the academic year. This program is not a substitute for formal counseling and does not constitute mental health treatment, but counselors can listen to specific problems, provide support, help explore solutions and give information about other resources. For more information, visit the Let's Talk website

No appointment is necessary, and drop-in hours are available on the Let's Talk calendar.

Care Program

Care provides coordinated case management, support and resources to students as they navigate the University and pursue their academic and personal goals.

Care Managers operate in a non-clinical capacity and do not provide formal counseling or therapy to students, but can help with academic concerns, physics, emotional, and/or mental health concerns, substance use/abuse and recovery support, unforeseen financial hardship, food and housing insecurity, and loss of a family member or friend.

There is no cost associated with meeting with a Care manager and they do NOT bill insurance for services. Care is available for drop-ins from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday in Appleby Hall, Room 205.

For more information, visit the Care program website

Boynton Mental Health Clinic

First-time visitors will meet with brief consultation providers to assess their needs, and review a range of options.

After that appointment, students can choose to schedule a regular therapy intake during winter break or at the start of the spring semester. The delay in additional appointments is due to very high demand for services. Students can also schedule a medication evaluation, spring semester therapy group, or other clinical services.

At any time, Boynton can help you connect with community resources if needed. Urgent counseling is always available during the weekdays. For more information, visit the Boynton Health website

Two Locations:

  • East Bank Clinic, 410 Church St S.E.
  • St. Paul Clinic, Coffey Hall,1420 Eckles Ave.

Crisis/Urgent consultation

If you (or someone you know) is having a mental health crisis and/or is in immediate danger, please call 911. Dangerous crisis situations include suicidal behaviors or threats, homicidal behavior or threats, irrational dangerous behavior, or excessive consumption of alcohol or drugs. If you are not sure whether the situation represents immediate danger, err on the side of caution and place the call.

Urgent counselors are available in person and by phone through Boynton and the Student Counseling Services. These services are not the same as those available in an emergency room and should not be substituted for a situation requiring immediate intervention. For more information, visit the Twin Cities Campus Student Mental Health website
