The 2020 Edythe and Irving Misel Family Lecture Series

Join the William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute (FTPI) for a special lecture featuring Klaus von Klitzing—Nobel Laureate and Professor at Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany.

On World Metrology Day 2019, all countries in the world changed the definition of the kilogram. As a result of this decision, all International System of Units (SI units) will now be defined in terms of constants that describe the natural world. The quantized Hall resistance effect (a discovery for which that von Klitzing won his 1985 Nobel Prize) played a crucial role for the realization of this new SI system. During this talk, von Klitzing will summarize the application of the quantum Hall effect in metrology with the focus on the replacement of the kilogram by a fixed value for the Planck constant.
