Ethics for the Working Mathematician

PRESENTED BY THE SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS

Speakers: From the School of Mathematics: Douglas Arnold, McKnight Presidential Professor; Kris Fowler, librarian; Andrew Odlyzko, professor

Topic: Although mathematics is often portrayed as less tethered to real world issues than other branches of science, in fact ethical issues of all sorts confront research mathematicians in their work. These include, for example, assignment of authorship, crediting of ideas, reuse of material, unbiased peer review, following fair access policies and principles, the potential of mathematical results to be used for harm, and many more. In this panel discussion, aimed primarily at young mathematical researchers, the panelists will provide a few examples of concern to them, and then the discussion will be opened for questions, concerns, and thoughts of the audience.

This event is open to outside attendees.
