Invest in state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure
State-of-the-art science facilities ensure faculty have what they need to advance their research and challenge students to work to their fullest potential. Facilities are often the deciding factor in recruitment and retention, as scholars look for environments that will maximize the progress of their work.
Critical to meeting the growing demand for programs such as industrial and systems engineering—40 percent of whom are women—and computer science and engineering are expanded facilities and infrastructure.
Another priority is to provide a state-of-the-art learning experience for increasing student numbers in chemistry, a discipline central to all science-based programs across the University of Minnesota, by creating an undergraduate chemistry teaching laboratory facility and renovating Smith Hall.
Additional space is needed for the growing robotics program within the College of Science and Engineering (CSE), located in Shepherd Lab. The space is poised to become a unique public-private partnership, combining the intellectual know-how of CSE faculty and students with the stated interests of industry and government leaders.
