U receives $5 million, announces new bioinformatics initiative

President Bob Bruininks announced a new initiative, the Consortium for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, which will be funded with $5 million in settlement money from Microsoft Corp. and $5 million in matching funds from the University.

George Freier, a retired University of Minnesota physics professor who was as well
known for his avuncular demeanor as his studies of lightning, rain, snowflakes,
and other weather-related phenomena, died Friday, May 13, in St. Joseph’s
Hospital, St. Paul, after a brief illness.

Campaign Minnesota has made history. The University is the first organization in Minnesota to raise $1 billion in gifts through a fundraising campaign and one of only a handful of public universities to do so nationally.

Geology and geophysics professor Kerry Kelts died February 8 at age 55 after an eight-year battle with Hodgkin’s disease. Morris Nicholson, professor emeritus of chemical engineering and materials science, died January 30 at age 84. John Winckler, professor emeritus of physics and an expert on auroras and the upper atmosphere, died February 6 at age 84.

Professor Mikhail Voloshin was awarded the 2001 J.J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics, becoming the third faculty member from the University’s Theoretical Physics Institute (TPI) to receive the prestigious honor in the last two years.
