Suraj Ravindran

Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics

Assistant Professor

Research Interests:

Materials in high speed flight, armor protection, and energy applications are subjected to extreme pressures, strain rates, and temperatures. Professor Ravi’s research aims to understand the multiscale mechanics of materials under such extreme loading conditions by developing new experiments and utilizing advanced computational tools. Ravi uses plate impact, laser-driven impact, and Kolsky bar experiments with diagnostic tools such as ultra-high-speed imaging, X-ray diffraction, photonic…

Jeff Yost headshot 2024

Charles Babbage Institute

Director, CBI & Research Professor, Program in the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine

Research Interests:

My primary areas of research are the business, social, and cultural and intellectual history of computing. I am also a highly experienced science and technology oral history specialist.

My current research includes a history of computer security book I am currently writing under contract with MIT Press. I also have deep interest in political economy, and societal implications of computing structuring and use. With this, I am especially interested in user experiences, power imbalances…

Cheng-Cher Huang

Physics

Professor Emeritus

Research Interests:

Our research is focused on smectic liquid crystal systems, mainly chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal compounds and their mixtures. Liquid crystals are systems that have symmetries intermediate between the crystalline solid and the isotropic liquid. Thus they are often called "Partially ordered systems".

"Smectic" comes from the Greek word "σμηγμα", which means soap. Indeed smectic liquid crystals have layered structure just like soap solution.
