Academic warning and suspension
The College of Science and Engineering believes that every student here has the potential to succeed.
If you are struggling academically, your academic advisor will help you identify your challenges and develop a plan for academic success.
Academic warning
The University places a student on academic warning when the term or cumulative grade point average (GPA) is below 2.0.
Steps you must complete while on academic warning
While you are on academic warning, you may register during your designated queue time only if you have completed the following steps:
- Register for classes.
You must be registered for courses before your academic warning advising appointment. - Meet with your assigned advisor.
You are required to meet with the advisor who serves as your primary advising contact — either your College Academic Advisor or Departmental College Advisor. You can find your assigned advisor in the MyU Academics tab. Your advisor will guide you through the academic warning process, help you understand your academic standing, and work with you to identify next steps that support your progress.
Appointments must be completed by the end of the fourth week of the semester. - Complete the Academic Warning Self-Assessment.
Complete the Academic Warning Self-Assessment form prior to your advising appointment and be prepared to discuss it. If the form is not completed before your appointment, your academic warning hold will not be released. You may be required to reschedule your appointment, which could delay your ability to register during your queue time. - Prepare for your advising appointment.
During your appointment, be prepared to discuss:- Your completed self-assessment
- Your goals for the term
- Changes you plan to make (or have already made) to improve your academic performance
- Any additional advising holds
If you have other registration holds placed by CSE Advising or your academic department, you may be required to complete additional advising steps. A minimum of 24 hours is required between advising appointments.
Academic warning requirements
As a CSE student, you must meet these minimum academic requirements during your academic warning semester in order to avoid suspension from the University:
- Complete the required academic warning advising appointment(s).
- Earn at least a 2.0 term GPA or achieve/maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
- Meet any additional requirements set by your college or academic department.
Significant changes to your coursework, missing or incomplete grades, or failure to complete college or department requirements may result in your continuing on academic warning at the discretion of the CSE Scholastic Committee.
Suspension
Students on academic warning are suspended from the University of Minnesota if their term and cumulative GPAs are both below 2.0 at the end of the warning term, or if they do not meet other terms of their academic warning contract. At that time, you will be dropped from any courses you have enrolled in for future terms and will not be eligible to register at the University of Minnesota for at least one academic year. You are encouraged to consult your academic advisor for guidance and support during that time.
There are two steps which must be completed when petitioning to return from academic suspension.
- Step 1: Complete the online Application for Readmission.
- Step 2: Complete the Petition for Reinstatement After Suspension form (pdf). The form, and additional important information can be found on the CSE Policies, procedures, and forms webpage. The completed form and supplemental documentation should be sent to [email protected]
Reinstatement is not automatic. You will need to demonstrate that you have made changes that will help facilitate a successful return to the University of Minnesota.
