Academic warning and suspension

The College of Science and Engineering believes that every student here has the potential to succeed.

If you are struggling academically, your academic advisor will help you identify your challenges and develop a plan for academic success.

Academic warning (previously known as academic probation)

The University places a student on academic warning when the term or cumulative grade point average (GPA) is below 2.0.

Steps you must complete while on academic warning

While you are on academic warning, you may register during your designated queue time if you have completed the following steps:

Pre-major (lower division) requirements

  1. Register for classes. You must be registered for classes prior to the academic warning appointment with your college advisor.
  2. Schedule an academic warning appointment with your college advisor. You must contact the CSE Academic Advising Office before the end of the fourth week of the semester to schedule that appointment. Schedule appointments online at cseadvising.appointments.umn.edu.
  3. Complete the Academic Warning Self-Assessment online form before your advising appointment and be prepared to discuss it with your college advisor. If this form is not complete at the start of your appointment, your academic warning hold will not be moved, and you may be required to reschedule your appointment. This means you may not be able to register at your queue time.
  4. During your appointment, be prepared to discuss your completed forms, as well as your goals for the term and changes you will make or have made to improve your academic record.

If you have other registration holds placed by the CSE Academic Advising Office, you will be required to schedule a second appointment with your college advisor to address those holds. There must be a minimum of 24 hours between each advising appointment.

Admitted to major (upper division) requirements

  1. Register for classes. You must be registered for classes prior to the academic warning appointments with your Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUGS)/departmental advisor and your college advisor.
  2. Schedule an academic warning appointment with your DUGS/departmental advisor. If you are admitted to more than one CSE major, you will need to meet with DUGS/departmental advisors from each of your majors.  Schedule this appointment before the end of the fourth week of the semester.
  3. Schedule an academic warning appointment with your college advisor. You must contact the CSE Academic Advising office before the end of the fourth week of the semester to schedule your appointment with your college advisor. This appointment must occur after your appointment with your DUGS/departmental advisor. Schedule appointments with your CSE college advisor online at cseadvising.appointments.umn.edu.
  4. Complete the Academic Warning Self-Assessment online form before your advising appointment and be prepared to discuss it with your DUGS/departmental advisor and college advisor. Then, have your Worksheet ready to discuss with your college advisor. If this form is not complete at the start of your appointment with your college advisor, your academic warning hold will not be moved, and you may be required to reschedule your appointment. This means you may not be able to register at your queue time.
  5. During your appointment, be prepared to discuss your completed forms, as well as your goals for the term and changes you will make/have made to improve your academic record.

Academic warning requirements

As a CSE student, you must meet these minimum academic requirements during your academic warning semester in order to avoid suspension from the University:

  • Complete the required academic warning advising appointment(s).
  • Earn at least a 2.0 term GPA or achieve/maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Meet any additional requirements set by your college or academic department.

Significant changes to your coursework, missing or incomplete grades, or failure to complete college or department requirements may result in your continuing on academic warning at the discretion of the CSE Scholastic Committee.

Suspension

Students on academic warning are suspended from the University of Minnesota if their term and cumulative GPAs are both below 2.0 at the end of the warning term, or if they do not meet other terms of their academic warning contract. At that time, you will be dropped from any courses you have enrolled in for future terms and will not be eligible to register at the University of Minnesota for at least one academic year. You are encouraged to consult your academic advisor for guidance and support during that time.

There are two steps which must be completed when petitioning to return from academic suspension.

Reinstatement is not automatic. You will need to demonstrate that you have made changes that will help facilitate a successful return to the University of Minnesota.

Petition for Reinstatement after Suspension Deadlines:

  • Fall semester–July 1
  • Spring semester–November 1
