Professional Background
Daniel Spirn, a mathematics professor at the University of Minnesota School of Mathematics since 2004, was named director of the IMA in July 2017. He first joined the IMA as deputy director in 2015 and served as director of the Minnesota Center for Industrial Mathematics from 2010-2015. He received an NSF Career Award in 2010. His research interests include applied mathematics and partial differential equations.
As director, he is responsible for the scientific and administrative leadership of the institute and is involved in almost all aspects of the IMA operation, particularly program development, external and university relations, strategic and financial planning, funding and fundraising, and personnel management and coordination.
