Ali Anwar’s research interests lie at the intersection of distributed systems and machine learning. The overarching goal of this research is to enable efficient and flexible systems for the growing data demands of modern applications, like distributed machine learning, running on existing as well as emerging computing platforms. Ongoing work focuses on (1) distributed machine/federated learning systems; (2) server-less and microservice-based systems; and (3) efficient storage for docker containers.

Ali Anwar joined the Department of Computer Science & Engineering in 2022 as an assistant professor. He received his M.Sc. (2013) in computer engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, and his Ph.D. (2018) in computer science from Virginia Tech. Prior to his time at the University, Anwar served as the technical lead at Mentor Graphics from 2009-13, a research assistant at Virginia Tech from 2013-18, and as a research staff member at IBM Research Almaden from 2018-22.
