AI could help track farm country's carbon emissions, U study says
DSI affiliate Zhenong Jin and CSE DSI director Vipin Kumar are two of the coauthors of a new study from the University of Minnesota that suggests a machine learning model could help solve the tricky question of where planet-warming gases are escaping from soil. New water treatment technology could boost economic growth
As part of the Great Lakes ReNEW consortium that recently received one of NSF's inaugural Regional Innovation Engine awards, a team of researchers at the University of Minnesota will work on developing technological innovations around water management and resource conservation. This includes advances in sensors or data science and analytics that can monitor the large data streams coming from those sensors. University of Minnesota selected as NSF Convergence Accelerator Phase 1 awardee for chemical water sensing
Led by CSE DSI affiliate Cara Santelli, a University of Minnesota Twin Cities team of scientists and engineers is one of only 16 Phase 1 teams selected nationwide to participate in the U.S. National Science Foundation Convergence Accelerator’s convergence research Track L: Real World Chemical Sensing Applications. Researchers from Grammarly and the University of Minnesota Introduce CoEdIT
Dongyeop Kang (CSE DSI affiliate) and Ryan Koo have worked with researchers from Grammarly to develop and introduce CoEdIT, an AI-based text editing system designed to provide writing assistance with a natural language interface. CSE, Marktechpost.

Phenotyping faster
CSE DSI affiliate Ce Yang, who leads the Agricultural Robotics Lab at the University of Minnesota, has been working with U of M crop researchers to develop faster ways to identify scab (Fusarium head blight) in grain crops. Doing this by hand takes a lot of people and is a tedious job, but Yang worked with Mineral, an Alphabet company, to use a rover they had developed, to move through fields and take high resolution images of individual spikes of wheat and barley. These thousands of photos were used to train the model to identify disease within the plots. Read more about the project.

Mapping cashew trees in Benin
Zhenong Jin, a CSE DSI affiliate and faculty member in the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering, led an effort to use artificial intelligence and remote sensing to map the location of cashew trees in the West African country Benin. According to TechnoServe, a non-profit organization collaborating on this project, the detailed information of where Benin’s cashews are grown has been turned into “a dashboard for policymakers, development organizations, and the private sector to efficiently target training, cashew tree nurseries, and other resources that benefit the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.” CFANS

University of Minnesota’s Polar Geospatial Center part of NASA collaboration to expand access to Earth observation data
The Polar Geospatial Center at the University of Minnesota holds high-resolution Digital Elevation Models produced by the NASA's EarthDEM Project along with other commercial Earth observation data purchased by NASA. In October 2023, NASA announced a major expansion of its Commercial Smallsat Data Acquisition Program. Seven companies will compete for contracts to provide Earth observation data and services. Under the new contract, NASA will acquire data under “end user license agreements to enable broad levels of dissemination and shareability of the commercial data,” thus solving an earlier problem affecting data sharing. UMN mathematicians collaborate on mathematical modeling of drug therapy
Collaborators Aaron Li, Mathematics PhD student, and Dr. Kyle B. Williams, Department of Pediatrics postdoctoral fellow, were recently awarded funding from both the Cancer Bioengineering Initiative and the Brain Tumor Program for a project that aims to advance the treatment of nervous system tumors through interdisciplinary collaboration that centers mathematical modeling of drug therapy. Li is advised by CSE DSI affiliate Jasmine Foo (Mathematics). Li and Williams will collaborate to develop a stochastic branching process model to predict in vivo behavior from in vitro data. They hypothesize that by integrating the Foo Laboratory’s capability to build predictive mathematical models to optimize drug scheduling and concentrations, the effectiveness of these therapies could be enhanced. CSE DSI Director Vipin Kumar a co-author on award-winning paper
The paper "Near-term forecasts of stream temperature using deep learning and data assimilation in support of management decisions" published in the Journal of the American Water Resources Association in in December 2022 was recently awarded the Ecological Society of America's Ecological Forecasting Outstanding Publication Award. Co-authors include several researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey in Pittsburgh and State College, PA, Madison, WI, and Davis, CA, as well as Prof. Vipin Kumar and his former student, Prof. Xiaowei Jia, at the University of Pittsburgh.

Greater MSP region wins designation as U.S. Tech Hub for medical technology with aim to integrate artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science into medical technology
An White House announcement from Pres. Biden on Monday, October 23, announced 31 new Tech Hubs in regions across the country, the first phase in the new Tech Hubs program. He named Minneapolis-Saint Paul and Minnesota as the country’s center for next-generation medical device technologies. This Tech Hub will leverage its medical technology ecosystem and concentration of hospitals, research institutions, and medical device manufacturers to develop a shared operating protocol for medical data, allowing for regional information-sharing and innovative collaboration. AI-CLIMATE: Curbing climate change with artificial intelligence
DSI associate director Shashi Shekhar is now director of UMN's new National AI Research Institute for Climate-Land Interactions, Mitigation, Adaptation, Tradeoffs, and Economy (AI-CLIMATE). DSI affiliate Jonathan Choi leads study at law school: ChatGPT takes law school exams
Earlier this year law professors at the University of Minnesota Law School decided to find out how well ChatGPT would do without human assistance on four law exams. They graded these exams (multiple choice and essay questions) blindly as part of their regular grading for the classes. ChatGPT received a low but passing grade in all four courses. Zhenong Jin co-leads study on measuring individual farm field-level greenhouse gas emissions
Zhenong Jin, a DSI affiliate and assistant professor in the Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering, has been working with a team led by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to synthesize more than 25 of their previous studies to quantify the emissions from US farmland. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Project Drawdown were also partners in the new study. Jin was quoted in AGDAILY: “Artificial intelligence also plays a critical role in realizing our ambitious goals to quantify every field’s carbon emission. Unlike traditional model-data fusion approaches, we used knowledge-guided machine learning, which is a new way to bring together the power of sensing data, domain knowledge, and artificial intelligence techniques.” AGDAILY

The Polar Geospatial Center at the University of Minnesota provides access to historical and new digital elevation models of polar regions
The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, National Reconnaissance Office and National Science Foundation have finalized an agreement to provide continued public access to historical and new digital elevation models created using commercial imagery collected over the Arctic and Antarctic. The agreement also allows NGA to share the imagery with NSF-funded university partners in order to update NSF’s ArcticDEM and Reference Elevation Model of Antarctica projects for the full 10-year duration of the contract, currently scheduled to end in 2032. The DEMs will also be publicly available on NGA’s  through ESRI’s ArcGIS platform and via NSF’s  at the University of Minnesota, enabling a wide variety of GIS, remote sensing, climate and mapping research use cases across the polar science community. Assistant Professor Nadja Strobbe gets grant to study machine learning in high energy physics
Nadja Strobbe, Assistant Professor in the School of Physics and Astronomy, has received $232,000 of a $4.3 million grant from the Department of Energy to improve machine learning in high energy physics. Strobbe’s research will use data from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland, specifically studies carried out by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Collaboration of which Strobbe is a member. The SIAM International Conference on Data Mining was held in Minneapolis on April 27-29, 2023. Several of our affiliated faculty were deeply involved in planning for the conference: DSI Associate Director Shashi Shekhar as General Co-chair, Yao-Yi Chiang as Program Co-chair, Ju Sun as Local Chair, and Jaideep Srivistava and Panel Chair. Others involved in the Steering Committee and Program Committees include DSI Director Vipin Kumar, George Karypis, and Daniel Boley.

CSE DSI affiliate Stevie Chancellor earns Amazon grant for machine learning and mental health project
Department of Computer Science & Engineering assistant professor Stevie Chancellor is the recipient of the Amazon Research Awards for spring/summer 2022 for her project titled, “Collaborative and socially translucent task instructions for emotionally heavy and subjective annotation tasks.” Her group will use this grant to improve machine learning techniques relating to mental health data. The team is dedicated to creating collaborative labeling interfaces for machine learning modeling while considering the subjectivity of distressing content. UMN CS&E

Joe Konstan, Associate Dean for Research in the College of Science & Engineering and a DSI affiliate, leads $2M grant
Joe Konstan, a Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the University of Minnesota Department of Computer Science & Engineering, will lead a $2 million NSF project aimed at developing a system to help researchers better study AI-powered news recommender systems. The University of Minnesota-led project aims to develop a shared news recommender system that will enable researchers nationwide to carry out live one-time and longitudinal experiences on users of AI systems that personalize the news-reading experience. DSI affiliate Stevie Chancellor and grad student Ashlee Milton study TikTok's effects on mental health
The study is designed to pinpoint the true effects the one-of-a-kind social media platform has on its viewers. While many enjoy TikTok’s ability to produce fun, creative content, others are skeptical of its harmful effects on the viewers’ mental health. “TikTok is misunderstood by people who don't use the platform,” Chancellor said. “Our research shows that TikTok helps people find community and mental health information. But, people should also be mindful of its algorithm, how it works, and when the system is providing them things that are harmful to their wellbeing.” UMN CS&E,  paper pdf

CSE DSI director Vipin Kumar part of $1.4 million University of Minnesota Medical School grant
The University of Minnesota Medical School has received a $1.4 million research grant for their work with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. Among this team of researchers is Department of Computer Science & Engineering’s Vipin Kumar, whose work will help improve patient safety with machine learning. Kumar is also also director of the Data Science Initiative in the College of Science & Engineering. The team is introducing ENTRUST AI, “ENsuring the TRUSTworthiness of AI/ML Models to Optimize Continual Patient Safety.” UMN Medical School

New master's degree in data science

CSE DSI affiliates part of Institute Grant on Spatial Data Science for Arctic and Antarctic Regions
DSI Associate Director Shashi Shekhar and affiliate Mohamed Mokbel are members of a team awarded a $13 million dollar grant for improving understanding of polar regions. The award was granted last year by the National Science Foundation to establish the HDR Institute: HARP - Harnessing Data and Model Revolution in the Polar Regions, an institute centered around study of Arctic and Antarctic regions using data science, physical models and cyberinfrastructure. The goal is to inform policy decisions regarding impending impacts of changes in polar regions ranging from cold outbreaks to sea-level rise. CSE DSI affiliate Dan Knights named as one of most "Highly Cited Researchers" in the world
Dan Knights, a computational biologist with joint appointments in the College of Science and Engineering and the College of Biological Sciences and a CSE DSI affiliate, was named in the biology and biochemistry most-cited list. His research uses data mining and machine learning to aggregate and mine multiple sources of microbial and human genomic data for patterns linking to environmental conditions and human disease. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a three-year $1.2 million grant for the project "Analytical Foundations for Deep Learning and Inference over Graphs" to a team of collaborating researchers at the University of Minnesota, including School of Mathematics Professor Jeff Calder. Great Lakes Digital Surface Model Products Released to the Public
The Great Lakes Alliance for Remote Sensing announced that the Digital Surface Model (DSM) strips and mosaics covering 85% of the Great Lakes Basin are now available for free use.
