Hugo Duminil-Copin is a renowned mathematician specializing in statistical physics. After completing his studies at Lycée Louis-le-Grand, École normale supérieure, and University Paris-Sud, he pursued a PhD at the University of Geneva under the mentorship of Stanislav Smirnov. His doctoral research focused on percolation theory and self-avoiding walks, producing groundbreaking results on phase transitions in hexagonal lattices, published in the Annals of Mathematics in 2012. Following the award of his PhD, Duminil-Copin was appointed assistant professor at the University of Geneva in 2013, becoming a full professor the following year. In 2016, he joined the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES) as a permanent professor, and since 2019, he has been a member of the Academia Europaea.
Duminil-Copin's research addresses critical behavior in lattice models, with a focus on phase transitions in statistical physics. His work uses probability theory to study the behavior of systems near critical points, including dependent percolation and Ising models. In collaboration with Vincent Beffara, he derived a formula for determining critical points in two-dimensional dependent percolation models. More recently, his joint work with Vincent Tassion and Aran Raoufi explored the size and connectivity of lattice components near the critical point, revealing key properties of "sharpness" in these models. Duminil-Copin has also advanced the understanding of conformal invariance and rotational symmetry in two-dimensional systems. Recognized for his significant contributions, he was awarded the 2017 New Horizons in Mathematics Prize and the Fields Medal in 2022. His work continues to transform the mathematical understanding of phase transitions in statistical physics.
