Experimental Virtual Online Linux Environment (VOLE-FX3)

VOLE-FX3 is a new and improved version of VOLE. It provides the same services, but uses significantly more modern software. 

Please note that VOLE-FX3 is still experimental. Please notify CSE-IT should you encounter any problems or issues while using VOLE-FX3. You can also provide feedback using the CSE Remote Desktop Feedback form.

Advantages of VOLE-FX3:

  • Based on FastX 3.3
  • Running the latest LTS version of Ubuntu Desktop
  • Compatible with Electron-based software, such as VS Code
  • Can run the Gnome desktop environment
  • Many UI/UX improvements, such as cut-and-paste being a lot more intuitive. 

Connect to VOLE-FX3

  1. Request a CSE Labs account, if you don’t already have one.
  2. Open a web browser and connect to VOLE-FX3.
  3. Login with your University Internet ID and password.
  4. Authenticate with Duo.
  5. Select the desktop environment you would like to launch by double-clicking on the corresponding icon in the “Applications” section.

Sessions

Due to high usage, VOLE-FX3 automatically disconnects sessions that have been idle for over four hours, and terminates sessions that have been disconnected for over 24 hours. 

System Maintenance

System maintenance of VOLE occurs weekly on Fridays between 6 and 7 a.m. Save your work to prevent loss of data.
