Minnesota Supercomputing Institute Grand Prize Goes to ME PhD Student

Suryanarayan (Surya) Ramachandran, a PhD student advised by ME Assistant Professor Suo Yang, was awarded the Grand Prize in the Physical Sciences and Engineering Category at the 2024 Minnesota Supercomputing Institute's Research Computing Exhibition. This is awarded to only one UMN student per year across all engineering disciplines, and comes with a $2000 travel grant.

Surya's winning poster highlighted his work on oblique detonation engines. Participants were judged on: the posters; how much research computing resources contributed to the outcome of the research presented; how well the use of research computing resources is communicated on the poster; and how well the importance of the scientific investigation is communicated.

In addition to the Grand Prize at MSI Research Computing Exhibition, Surya's research was also featured as breakthroughs in clean and high-speed combustion systems by Aerospace America’s 2023 Year in Review and was recently published in Combustion and Flame
