Transfer Coursework Process
Graduate students may begin requesting to have their coursework transferred during their first semester of studies. Prior to transferring coursework, students must have an official transcript on file. Courses being transferred must have been completed at the graduate level. Please note that the Graduate School rarely allows us to transfer graduate-level courses if they are listed on an undergraduate or dual bachelor’s/master’s degree transcript.
The steps to transfer coursework is below.
For transfer coursework completed at a U.S. institution:
- Email the Graduate Program Coordinator and Director of Graduate Studies for your program with a copy of your transcript and the syllabi for the courses you would like to transfer. They will review and let you know if any of the courses are approved for transfer. In this request, you must also include a justification of which course is comparable at the University of Minnesota.
- Once courses are approved, email the Graduate Program Coordinator with your name, student ID number, transfer course names/numbers, and the degree category (core, elective, or outside coursework) you’d like to transfer the course to.
- The Graduate Program Coordinator will upload the transfer coursework to your GPAS which is where we manage student coursework.
For transfer coursework completed at an international institution:
- Email the Graduate Program Coordinator and Director of Graduate Studies for your program with a copy of your transcript and the syllabi for the courses you would like to transfer. They will review and let you know if any of the courses are approved for transfer. In this request, you must also include a justification of which course is comparable at the University of Minnesota.
- Once courses are approved, email the Graduate Program Coordinator with your name, student ID number, transfer course names/numbers, and the degree category (core, elective, or outside coursework) you’d like to transfer the course to.
- Courses taken at an international institution require additional approval from the Graduate School. The Graduate Program Coordinator will email the appropriate party to review your request.
- If approved, the Graduate Program Coordinator will upload the transfer coursework to your GPAS which is where we manage student coursework. Note that international coursework may be reduced in credit value (i.e. a 8 credit course at your home institution may only be transferred as 3 credits at the University of Minnesota).
