Academic probation and suspension

The College of Science and Engineering believes that every student here has the potential to succeed.

If you are struggling academically, your academic advisor will help you identify your challenges and develop a plan for academic success.

Academic probation

The University places a student on academic probation when the term or cumulative grade point average (GPA) is below 2.0.

Steps you must complete while on academic probation

While you are on academic probation, you may register during your designated queue time if you have completed the following steps:

Pre-major (lower division) requirements

  1. Register for classes. you must be registered for classes prior to the probation appointment with your college advisor.
  2. Schedule a probation appointment with your college advisor. You must contact the CSE Academic Advising Office before the end of the fourth week of the semester to schedule that appointment. Schedule appointments online at cseadvising.appointments.umn.edu.
  3. Complete the Academic Probation Self-Assessment worksheet (PDF), in advance of your appointment, and be prepared to discuss your Worksheet with your college advisor. If this form is not complete at the start of your appointment, your probation hold will not be moved, as you will not have met a term of your probation. This means you will not be able to register at your queue time. This may require rescheduling your appointment with your advisor. Download the pdf forms at cse.umn.edu/policies.
  4. During your appointment, be prepared to discuss your completed forms, as well as your goals for the term and changes you will make or have made to improve your academic record.

If you have other registration holds placed by the CSE Academic Advising Office, you will be required to schedule a second appointment with your college advisor. There must be a minimum of 24 hours between each advising appointment.

Admitted to major (upper division) requirements

  1. Register for classes. you must be registered for classes prior to the probation appointments with your Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUGS)/departmental advisor and your college advisor.
  2. Schedule a probation appointment with your DUGS/departmental advisor. If you are admitted to more than one CSE major, you will need to meet with DUGS/departmental advisors from each of your majors.
  3. Schedule a probation appointment with your college advisor. You must contact the CSE Academic Advising office before the end of the fourth week of the semester to schedule your appointment with your college advisor. This appointment cannot be scheduled for a date before your appointment with your DUGS/departmental advisor. Schedule appointments with your CSE college advisor online at cseadvising.appointments.umn.edu.
  4. Complete the Academic Probation Contract and Self-Assessment Worksheet, and be prepared to discuss your Worksheet with your DUGS/departmental advisor. Then, have your Worksheet ready to discuss with your college advisor. If this form is not complete at the start of your appointment with your college advisor, your probation hold will not be moved, as you will not have met a term of your probation. This means you will not be able to register at your queue time. This may require rescheduling your appointment with your advisor. Download pdf forms at cse.umn.edu/policies.

During your appointment, be prepared to discuss your completed forms, as well as your goals for the term and changes you will make/have made to improve your academic record.

Academic probation requirements

As a CSE student, you must meet these minimum academic requirements during your probation semester in order to avoid suspension from the University:

  • Complete the required probation meeting(s).
  • Earn at least a 2.0 term GPA or achieve/maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Meet any additional requirements set by your college academic advisor and/or Director of Undergraduate Studies/departmental (major) advisor.

Significant changes to your coursework, missing or incomplete grades, and/or failure to complete at least one technical course (3-plus credits) may result in your continuing on probation at the discretion of the CSE Scholastic Committee.

Suspension

Failure to meet any of the requirements of your academic probation will result in your suspension from the University of Minnesota. At that time, you will be dropped from any courses you have enrolled in for future terms and will not be eligible to register at the University of Minnesota for at least one academic year. You are encouraged to consult your academic advisor for guidance and support during that time.

There are two steps which must be completed when petitioning to return from academic suspension.

Reinstatement is not automatic. You will need to demonstrate that you have made changes that will help facilitate a successful return to the University of Minnesota.

Petition for Reinstatement after Suspension Deadlines:

  • Fall semester–July 1
  • Spring semester–November 1
