Updated Service: CSE Labs Process Limits
The number of processes you can run on a CSE Lab machine has changed to match the limits of the Virtual Online Linux Environments (VOLE).
Process Limits
Process limits are per login session and independent of each other. Each login (including via ssh) and each terminal window, has its own limit.
Default Process Limit
When you login to a computer you start with a default limit of 1,000 processes.
Maximum Process Limit
You can increase your process limit up to 5,000 processes.
Increasing Process Limits
You can increase the process limit of your session up to the maximum 5,000 processes by following instructions in our Manage Process Limits self-help guide.
If you require additional process limits, email csehelp@umn.edu and include your use or business case.
Reason for Change
The process limits have changed to match VOLE process limits to prevent fork bombs—or rabbit viruses—where a process endlessly clones itself and makes a computer frozen or non-responsive.
