Connect to a Linux CSE Labs Computer with a Graphical User Interface

A full Linux desktop on any CSELabs Linux Workstation can currently be accessed remotely, using the same ThinLinc software powering the Virtual Online Linux Environment.

Connecting using a Web Browser

  1. Choose an Ubuntu computer to connect to from the list of CSE Labs computers.
    • Note: Pick a random number. If too many people connect to the same computer it may impact performance.
  2. Open a web browser.
  3. Enter the computer name in the address bar.
  4. Login with your University InternetID and password.
  5. Authenticate with Duo.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions on selecting a profile, the desktop environment you would like to launch. A Linux desktop will start up.
    • Xfce is recommended

Connecting using the ThinLinc Client

  1. Download and install the ThinLinc Client software for your operating system
  2. Choose an Ubuntu computer to connect to from the list of CSE Labs computers.
    • Note: Pick a random number. If too many people connect to the same computer it may impact performance.
  3. Open the ThinLinc client application
  4. In the Server field, entehr the computer name
  5. Enter your username and password and select Connect.
  6. Authenticate with Duo.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions on selecting a profile, the desktop environment you would like to launch. A Linux desktop will start up.
