Math in Sports, for Fun and Profit
Industrial Problems Seminar
John Sears (Los Angeles Dodgers)
Abstract
When people think about math in sports, the canonical example is "Moneyball"-- using data to identify undervalued players and strategies. While this is clearly an important use case, there are many other interesting and useful ways in which math can be of service. In this lecture, we will run through a series of examples that show off a wide range of industrial mathematical tools that provide value in decision-making in sports.
