Adventures in Math
Adventures in Math is a summer enrichment program for students in 4th through 6th grade. Students will participate in hands-on experiments and interactive activities led by instructors and university student mentors from the University of Minnesota. Our goal is not to accelerate students through standard curriculum, but instead explore fun mathematics topics, and get students excited about math. Available to any student in 4th through 6th grade with a love of math!
Scholarships are readily available in cases of financial need. Please contact our office if the cost of the programs would prevent your child from participating.
Workshop Logistics
- Adventures in Math will be held on August 13th through 15th, 2025.
- Students will meet each day from 9am to 3pm, hall TBD
- About a week prior to the event, students will receive a reminder via e-mail with logistics including address and parking information.
- Cost is $125 for the three day day event.
Adventures in Math Topics
Origami
Learn the mathematics behind origami as you fold to construct four different 3-dimensional objects! Discover the patterns and symmetries behind these figures. Explore the connection between regular polygons and Euclid’s platonic solids. Demonstrate the concept of duality found in your own construction of the platonic solids.
Polyhedra
The Platonic solids are the most regular polyhedra and have been studied for thousands of years. Learn about the regular polygons that build up polyhedra, then experiment with polydrons and balloons to create your own models of these fascinating figures.
Tesselations
Play with shapes and create new shapes to see how they fit together, explore symmetry patterns in two dimensional figures, and create your own tessellations!
Eulerian Graphs
In the 18th Century, Leonhard Euler sought to walk across all the bridges in his city of Königsberg such that he crossed each bridge exactly once, and ended up on the same land mass as where he started. Learn how to solve this problem using Euler's field of graph theory. Can we apply this theory to the University of Minnesota campus?
Gears
Explore aspects of the theories of motion, force and speed while constructing gear ratio models and examining the patterns they create. Learn about the relationships between fractions and factoring through a variety of hands-on activities, using visualization and modeling to discover the principles that make the world go ‘round.
Spherical Geometry
What does it mean to live on a sphere? When we fly or sail to another continent, we’re following a line on a sphere. Living on a spherical planet forces us to use spherical geometry. Learn about the geometry of the sphere, and compare it to the regular geometry of a plane.
Family Agreement
By completing the Registration Form, student and parent(s) are confirming that they reviewed and discussed the following points.
Students...
- Must be prepared to have fun while learning mathematics!
- Must behave responsibly -- walk between classes, stay with your group, use a quiet voice while in class and on break, clean up after yourself, and respect the property of other participants, staff and the University.
- Must be respectful in words and actions to other students, teaching assistants and teachers. Students will respond respectfully to the authority of the teacher and teaching assistants. Instructors will not tolerate disruptive or disorderly behaviors that interfere with classroom instruction.
- Must follow instructions from enrichment leaders and event staff.
Parents...
- Must punctually drop-off and pick-up students.
- Understand that only a student registered for a program may attend that program's workshops.
- Understand that students with the following symptoms may NOT attend a MathCEP workshop: a fever over 100 degrees; coughing; a contagious skin rash; vomiting.
- Understand that participants who fail to respect or follow the above policies are subject to dismissal from MathCEP programs.
- Must agree that MathCEP has the right to take photos for the purpose of promotional materials.
- Understand there is a $30 administrative fee for refunds processed before the program begins and there are no refunds once the program begins.
