Spring 2022 Algebra Entrance Exam Registration

The Spring 2022 exams are now completed for Twin Cities students interested in joining UMTYMP Algebra this fall.  The next opportunity to take the entrance exam for UMTYMP Algebra in the Twin Cities will be in Spring 2023; check our webpage in January 2023 for more information.

We anticipate releasing results from our April exams by the end of May.

Twin Cities students who are currently in 5th, 6th, or 7th grade and would like to join UMTYMP Algebra next year (2022-23) must take our entrance exam this spring.  The information below applies to Twin Cities families only.  Rochester families should click here instead.  We'll update our website if we run entrance exams in Duluth this year.

Spring 2022 Entrance Exam Information

We are planning to hold two rounds of entrance exam tests this year.  All exams are in-person, on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota.

Round 1
Saturday, February 12, 2022: 9:30am, 10:00am, 11:30am, 12:00pm
Saturday, February 19, 2022: 9:30am, 10:00am, 11:30am, 12:00pm

Round 2
Saturday, April 23, 2022: 9:30am, 10:00am, 11:30am, 12:00pm
Wednesday, April 27, 2022: 7:00pm
Saturday, April 30, 2022: 9:30am, 10:00am, 11:30am, 12:00pm

Students who test in February can retest in April if they are not admitted after Round 1.  There is no opportunity to retest after Round 2.  Do not register for both rounds at this time.  Students who re-test after Round 1 will use a different registration site; that information will be distributed after Round 1 results are available.  If you register for both rounds at this time, your registration may be cancelled with no refund.

Further information:

Although the University has lifted many of its COVID-19 restrictions, for everybody’s safety and peace of mind, we will continue to implement many pandemic protocols.  This list may change if the University policies are modified, but as of March 1, we plan to continue the following guidelines:

  • All students and adults (including families and staff) will be required to wear masks indoors. (This is a current University policy.)
  • We will limit the number of students during each testing session to ensure they remain 6 feet apart.  The large auditoriums we use for testing will be filled to about one quarter of their capacity.
  • We will streamline the process so that each testing session lasts for less than 45 minutes, instead of the normal 60+ minutes.
  • We will alternate between two testing rooms, so that there is a longer time gap between tests in any given room.
  • There will be strict guidelines about when and where to enter and exit the building, so that two groups of testers are never in the hallways at the same time.  Each student should be accompanied by only one person during the check-in process.

In the past, first-time testers had the option to come to campus in February to learn about the entrance exam and take a practice test.  This year everybody who signs up for the entrance exam will have access to a University website with that information and online practice problems.

Please be aware that the current plan is for all Twin Cities UMTYMP courses to be on campus next year (2022-23), but it is too early to know if any COVID-19 protocols will still be in place.  If your student qualifies for UMTYMP algebra this year but you are not comfortable sending them to class, you can defer admission for a year.  (A student must start UMTYMP algebra by 8th grade if they want to complete our entire 5-year sequence of courses.)

Registration Instructions

To access the registration system, click the appropriate button below and follow the on-screen directions.  Please make sure to register using an account for the parent/guardian; as part of the registration process you will be asked for information about the student.  Because the parent/guardian is registering and paying the fee, the email receipt will have their name, and not the student's name.  This is normal, and we will use the student's name for the exam itself.

Please note:  If you are registering more than one student, you will need to use a different account (and different email address) for each.

Registration Link for Round 2 Exams (4/23/22, 4/27/22 and 4/30/22)

After registering, you can use the same account to access a website with more information about the exam, directions to the building, and practice problems.  A link to that website will be included in your email confirmation, or you can use the following links.  (Make sure to use the correct link, depending on whether you registered for Round 1 or Round 2.)
