UMTYMP Entrance Exam Retesting
Students who took an UMTYMP entrance exam in February 2024 but were not admitted to UMTYMP Algebra may take the exam a second time this spring. In the Twin Cities, the Spring 2024 Round 2 exams are on April 12th, 17th, and 20th. In Rochester, the Round 2 exam is on April 20th. There will be a second round of testing for the Greater MN Area in the Twin Cities on April 20th.
If you wish to register your student to take the exam again, please read the information on this page carefully before using the registration links below.
Should my Student Retest?
Students who retake the UMTYMP entrance exam a year later often have large score increases. However, students who retake the exam during the same year generally get about the same score, perhaps moving up or down 1-2 points. Most years, the median change in retesters' scores from one round to the next is 0 points. There are some exceptions. For example, some students are anxious during their first exam, and get a lower score than they are capable of. Once they are familiar with the process and more at ease, their scores increase.
Admissions decisions are based on multiple factors, although the entrance exam score is the most important. There is no set "passing line" for UMTYMP entrance exams, but we try to provide some guidance about retesting when we email families about results, based on their score and the distribution of scores on their exam. Please see your email for more information.
Registration Instructions
To access the registration system, click the appropriate button below and follow the on-screen directions. You will enter the same information as you did when registering for the first exam. You can provide the same answers, or update the information as needed. (For example, your secondary emergency contact might be different during this exam.)
Students are required to answer three "mini-essay" questions as part of the registration process. They may write new essays if they wish, but this is not required. Instead, you can write the word "Retesting" in each of those answer blanks, and we will use their answers from their first registration as necessary.
Please do not email us updated essay answers. If students want to update their answers, it should be done at the time of registration.
Other important notes:
- You should use the same account that you used to register your student for the first exam. Using a different account could delay the reporting of your student's score. If you registered more than one student for the first exam, please be sure to use the correct account for each student when registering for the second exam.
- That account should be for the parent/guardian; as part of the registration process you will be asked for information about the student.
- Because the parent/guardian is registering and paying the fee, the email receipt will have their name, and not the student's name. This is normal, and we will use the student's name for the exam itself.
Please register at the correct site. Twin Cities students should only test at the Twin Cities site. Students who qualify at the Rochester site will take their UMTYMP courses in Rochester.
TWIN CITIES: Registration for Round 2 (4/13/24, 4/17/24, 4/20/24)
ROCHESTER: Registration for Round 2 (4/20/24)
GREATER MINNESOTA: Registration for Round 2 (4/20/24)
After registering, you can use the same account to log in to Canvas to access information about the exam, directions to the building, and practice problems. A link to that website will be included in your email confirmation. You can also log in to learning.umn.edu to look up details about your registration.
