Spring 2024 Greater Minnesota Algebra Entrance Exam Registration

Students who are currently in 5th, 6th, or 7th grade and would like to join UMTYMP Algebra next year (2024-25) in our new online section must take the qualifying exam this spring.  Families wishing to test in Rochester (for in-person classes in Rochester or an online section) should go to this page; families interested in the Twin Cities site should see this page instead.  Families from the rest of Minnesota should use the links on this page.

Spring 2024 Entrance Exam Information

We are planning to hold two rounds of entrance exams for families in Greater Minnesota.  Although the classes for these UMTYMP sections will be online, the entrance exam (and possibly the course exams) are in-person.

For Round 1 exams, MathCEP Staff will travel around the state to different UMN campuses, or students can register for a separate exam on the Twin Cities campus.  For Round 2, students can come to the Twin Cities campus.

Round 1 exams are as follows:

Crookston - Saturday, March 16th (10:00am)
Duluth - Saturday, March 2nd (10:00am)
Morris - Wednesday, March 6th (6:00pm)
Twin Cities - Saturday, February 17th (1:30pm)

The 1:30pm exam at the Twin Cities is specifically for students in Greater Minnesota who wish to take the exam in the Twin Cities, instead of Duluth, Morris, or Crookston.

Round 2 is scheduled for Saturday, 4/20/24, at 1:30pm in the Twin Cities.

Students who test in February can retest in April if they are not admitted after Round 1.  There is no opportunity to retest this year after Round 2.  Do not register for both rounds at this time.  Students who re-test after Round 1 will be provided with a registration link at that time after Round 1 results are available.  If you register for both rounds at this time, your registration may be cancelled with no refund.

Registration for each exam closes at noon on the preceding Wednesday.

Further information:

In the past, first-time testers had the option to come to campus in February to learn about the entrance exam and take a practice test.  This year everybody who signs up for the entrance exam will have access to a University website with that information and online practice problems.

If your student qualifies for UMTYMP Algebra this year but you are not comfortable sending them to class, you can defer admission for a year.  (A student must start UMTYMP Algebra by 8th grade if they want to complete our entire 5-year sequence of courses.)

Please contact is (612-625-2861, mathcep@umn.edu) if you have questions!

Registration Instructions

To access the registration system, click the appropriate button below and follow the on-screen directions.  Please make sure to register using an account for the parent/guardian; as part of the registration process you will be asked for information about the student.  Because the parent/guardian is registering and paying the fee, the email receipt will have their name, and not the student's name.  This is normal, and we will use the student's name for the exam itself.

Please note:  If you are registering more than one student, you will need to use a different account (and different email address) for each.

After registering, please be sure to monitor the email you used to register, and remember your password for the registration system.  Any updates about the exam will be sent to that email address.  Also, we'll send you information about how to use the same account and password to access a website with more information about the exam, directions to the testing locations, and practice problems.

You can also log back in to learning.umn.edu to look up details about your registration.
