Summer 2021 Algebra Entrance Exam Registration

Twin Cities students who will be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade this fall and would like to join UMTYMP Algebra must take our entrance exam this summer.

Round 2 Registration

To register for Round 2, please click the button below.  If you previously registered for an exam on 7/24 or 7/26, there is no need to register again!  You should only use the new registration site if you are (a) retesting, or (b) registering for the first time this summer.  If you need to access the previous registration site for any reason, you can follow this link.

Registration Instructions

If you do not have an account with the University of Minnesota, you can select "New User" and create a guest account.  Please follow the directions on the registration site, and feel free to contact us at [email protected] if you have any difficulties.  In most cases, because parents log on to the system and pay the fee, the receipt will have their name, and not the student's name.  This is normal, and we will use the student's name (entered as part of the registration process) for the exam itself.

The registration link will stay active until noon on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. 

After registering, you can use the same account to access this website with more information about the exam and practice problems.  You can also log in to learning.umn.edu to look up details about your registration.

Please note:  If you are registering more than one student, you will need to use a different account (and different email address) for each.

Summer 2021 Entrance Exam Information

We are planning to hold over 25 total testing sessions during the following times:

Round 1
Saturday, July 10, 2021: 9:30am - 2:00pm
Monday, July 12, 2021: 9:30am - 2:00pm
Tuesday, July 13, 2021: 4:30pm - 8:00pm

Round 2
Saturday, July 24, 2021: 9:30am - 2:00pm
Monday, July 26, 2021: 2:30pm - 8:00pm

Each of those dates will have multiple exams — for example, 4:30pm, 5:00pm, 6:30pm, and 7:00pm on Tuesday 7/13.  Students can expect to be on campus for about one hour for their testing session.the most current information.)

Further information:

Although the University has lifted most of its COVID-19 restrictions, many of those guidelines remain in place for programs involving minors.  In particular, many of the students who will take the exam are not yet vaccinated, or not eligible to be vaccinated.  For everybody’s safety and peace of mind, we will continue to implement many pandemic protocols, including:

  • All students and adults (including families and staff) will be required to wear masks indoors.
  • We will limit the number of students during each testing session to ensure they remain 6 feet apart.  The large auditoriums we use for testing will be filled to about one quarter of their capacity.
  • We will streamline the process so that each testing session lasts for less than 45 minutes, instead of the normal 60+ minutes.
  • We will alternate between two testing rooms, so that there is a longer time gap between tests in any given room.  We will also clean surfaces between tests.
  • There will be strict guidelines about when and where to enter and exit the building, so that two groups of testers are never in the hallways at the same time.  Each student should be accompanied by only one person during the check-in process.

Normally a student who tests in February/March has an option to retest in Algebra if they do not qualify on the earlier exam.  This year we anticipate a limited number of students who take the test during Round 1 (7/10-7/13) could retest during Round 2 (7/24-7/26).  If you would like to keep this option open, you should sign up for an exam during Round 1, and we will contact you between rounds with followup information as appropriate.

First-time testers usually have the option to come to campus in February to learn about the entrance exam and take a practice test.  This year everybody who signs up for the entrance exam will have access to a University website with that information and online practice problems.

Please be aware that the current plan is for courses at the University of Minnesota, including UMTYMP, to be held on campus this fall, but it is not yet clear if any COVID-19 protocols will be in place.  If your student qualifies for UMTYMP algebra this year but you are not comfortable sending them to class, you can defer admission for a year.  (A student must start UMTYMP algebra by 8th grade if they want to complete our entire 5-year sequence of courses.)
