2023 Pui Best Dissertation Award Winner: Tianyi Li

UMN ME PhD Tianyi Li ('21) is the winner of the 2023 Pui Best Dissertation Award, created by Professor David Pui to recognize the time and effort required to pursue a doctorate of the highest caliber. Li's dissertation, "Numerical and Theoretical Investigation of Coupled Wind-Wave-Current Environment," addresses the long-standing question of how wind forms ocean waves, confirming and improving a well-known theory through advanced computer simulations. The study introduces a new model for understanding how ocean waves evolve over space and time.

During his time at UMN ME, Li was advised by Professor Lian Shen, and was part of the Fluid Mechanics Lab. He is now a postdoctoral researcher at the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
