Bharat Jalan appointed to the Board of Reviewing Editors at Science

Bharat Jalan, Professor and Shell Chair in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota, has been appointed to the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science, one of the world’s leading peer-reviewed scientific journals.

In this role, Jalan will assist Science editors in evaluating manuscript submissions, identifying papers that should be sent for in-depth peer review, and recommending expert reviewers. He will contribute expertise in materials science, synthesis science, quantum materials, complex oxides, magnetism, and epitaxial thin films and membranes.

Published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Science is widely recognized for publishing research of broad scientific significance across disciplines. The Board of Reviewing Editors includes leading scientists from around the world who advise the journal’s editors on timely, rigorous, and impactful research.

Jalan’s appointment reflects his international reputation for advancing the synthesis and understanding of complex oxide thin films and quantum materials. His research group has pioneered hybrid molecular beam epitaxy approaches to create high-quality crystalline materials and interfaces with properties that are difficult to realize by conventional methods.

“I am honored to join Science’s Board of Reviewing Editors and to serve the broader scientific community in this role,” Jalan said. “I see this as a recognition of the growing importance of synthesis science, where the ability to create materials with atomic-level precision can enable new discoveries in quantum materials, electronics, and energy science.”

In addition, Jalan serves as Deputy Editor of Science Advances, a sister journal to Science published by the AAAS.
