Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowship

2026 CBI IDFs

What is the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowship?

The Interdisciplinary Doctoral Fellowship (IDF) provides a unique opportunity for outstanding mid-career Ph.D. students who are engaged in interdisciplinary research to study with faculty at one of the University’s interdisciplinary research centers or institutes during the fellowship year.

Applicants designate the host center, institute, or initiative they believe is the best match with their planned dissertation topic, contingent upon endorsement by the host center, institute, or initiative. Applicants can propose a project with any of the Institutes/Centers and Initiatives listed in the University database (requires UMN log-in; make sure only Institute/Center or Initiative is selected as “Type” on left-hand side). Applicants should check with mentors and directors early to ensure a good match.

About the CBI IDF

The Charles Babbage Institute for Computing, Information and Culture (CBI), a partnership of HSTM, College of Science and Engineering and University Libraries, has been delighted to host a wide range of social scientific and humanities scholars as Interdisciplinary Doctor Fellows (IDFs). This includes IDFs from the home departments/schools of Carlson School of Management, Hubert H. Humphrey of Public Affairs, Department of Sociology, Department of Anthropology, Department of Political Science, and the Department of Geography, Environment, and Society. We seek candidates who can benefit from the expertise of professional historians, archivists, oral history, and our vast resources to study the history and sociology of the digital world.

CBI has major symposia in interdisciplinary digital technology studies (such as "Just Code," "Automation by Design," and "MOSAICS"), provides editorial leadership (has an interdisciplinary journal, Interfaces: Essays and Reviews in Computing and Culture, and co-edits a Johns Hopkins University Press book series, Studies in Computing and Culture), has a world renowned Oral History Program, and houses the top global collection of historical archives on information technology in the world.

CBI Director Jeffrey Yost, a historian of science, technology, and medicine and Research Professor in History of Science, Technology and Medicine (HSTM), has now mentored seven past IDF scholars, sometimes in partnership with HSTM Assoc. Professor and CBI Research Historian Honghong Tinn. We have a vast network including many esteemed CBI Research Fellows who are also supportive to create a very rich interdisciplinary environment. We can offer space in the CBI Suite to IDFs, the incredible archives are available for use in the Andersen Library Reading Room, and in most instances can provide a travel presentation stipend to recipients of an IDF to work at CBI. For information, please contact CBI Director Jeffrey Yost.
