Matthew Martell is a Teaching Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Minnesota. Previously, Dr. Martell taught industrial engineering at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and also spent two years teaching mathematics in the Minnesota public school system. His pedagogy is built on inclusivity, active learning, and the conviction that every student brings something valuable to the classroom. As an educator, Dr. Martell strives to continuously improve his teaching practice by participating in teacher education activities. His research applied data science techniques to understand how communities recover from disaster events, with specific focus on the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also applied a big data approach to understanding sports and games, with his most recent focus being esports.
