The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Minnesota seeks applicants for the position of Department Head.

The department currently has 15 full-time faculty members with approximately 200 undergraduate and 70 graduate students. The department has experienced significant growth over the past decade and offers a full slate of undergraduate and graduate courses leading to Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. degrees in Industrial and Systems Engineering. The department also offers a B.S. degree in Data Science, joint with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the School of Statistics, and the School of Mathematics. Faculty in the department have core expertise in operations research with emphasis in optimization, stochastics, and game theory and in areas that intersect machine learning and the data sciences. Faculty pursue a variety of applications with a particular focus on operations management (supply chains, service systems, revenue management, and markets) and with a growing footprint in the areas of transportation, healthcare, energy, and the environment. The department supports multi-disciplinary research that addresses important societal challenges.

Applicants should hold a doctorate in a field related to Industrial and Systems Engineering and have an outstanding record in research, teaching, and service commensurate with appointment as a tenured full professor. The successful candidate should also possess strong leadership and management abilities, an interest in promoting sponsored research programs and mentoring faculty, and a deep commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. The candidate should be able to work with diverse groups of faculty, staff, students, administrators, alumni, and industry representatives.

The head of the department reports directly to the Dean of the College of Science and Engineering, and one term is nominally 5 years with the possibility of renewal. The College is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community and who will build collaborative ties with other departments within the College and the University.

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities invites applications to fill a full-time tenure-track faculty position beginning Fall 2024. Exceptional applicants with strong records of research, teaching, scientific leadership, and creativity may be considered for higher rank and tenure. 

We seek candidates whose research is problem-driven and grounded in a broad set of methodological foundations. Individuals whose interests and backgrounds are at the intersection of Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and/or Data Analytics with other fields in Engineering, Computer Science, or Statistics are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in applications including, but not limited to, healthcare delivery and medical decision making, transportation and mobility, supply chains and service operations, or energy systems and the environment. We particularly welcome applications from candidates from diverse cultures and communities. Applicants should hold or expect to complete by Fall 2024 a Ph.D. in Engineering, Operations Research, Operations Management, or a related discipline, and have demonstrated the potential to conduct a successful research program as evidenced by their publication record and supporting reference letters. The candidate’s expertise and documented research activities must demonstrate a strong potential to enhance both the department’s research and teaching missions. The successful candidate is expected to build a strong, externally funded, highly visible research program and to become a recognized leader in their respective field. The ability to effectively teach a wide variety of classes related to industrial engineering at both the graduate and undergraduate levels to a diverse group of students is required.
