About the Job
The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities invites applications to fill two full-time tenure-track faculty positions beginning Fall 2025. Exceptional applicants with strong records of research, teaching, scientific leadership, and creativity may be considered for higher rank and tenure. We seek candidates whose research is application-driven and grounded in a broad set of methodological foundations. Individuals whose interests and backgrounds are at the intersection of Operations Research, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and/or Data Analytics with other fields in Engineering, Computer Science, or Statistics are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in applications including, but not limited to, healthcare delivery and medical
decision making, security and defense, transportation and mobility, supply chains and service operations, or energy systems and the environment. We particularly welcome applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and communities. Applicants should hold or expect to complete by the beginning of Fall 2025 a Ph.D. in Engineering, Operations Research, Operations Management, or a related discipline, and have demonstrated the potential to conduct a successful research program as evidenced by their publication record and supporting reference letters. The candidate’s expertise and documented research activities must demonstrate a strong potential to enhance both the department’s research and teaching missions. The successful candidate is expected to build a vibrant, externally funded, highly visible

Industrial and Systems Engineering Chief of Staff
About the Job
The department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE) at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, is seeking an experienced and energetic individual for the position of Chief of Staff. The target start date will be at the beginning of the Spring 2025 semester. This is an exciting opportunity to manage the department’s operations, finances, human resources, and facilities. This person will work in collaboration with, and at the direction of, department leadership, as we pursue strategic growth.
The position serves as an advisor to the department head and acts as a liaison to the College of Science and Engineering Dean’s office on essentially all financial, operational, and human resource matters. The individual will supervise five other staff members working on functions such as student services, marketing and communications, purchasing, accounting, and faculty affairs.
This position calls for a diligent and thoughtful leader with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. It also requires outstanding analytical capabilities to foresee the short-term and/or long-term implications of various interrelated operational, tactical, and strategic decisions. The individual should possess sound judgment, discretion, and tact to help the department head with day-to-day operations of the unit. The position offers independence to supervise the work of administrative staff, and to execute special requests and projects initiated by the department head. It calls for the ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects, and to advise the department head in wisely allocating departmental resources. A thorough knowledge of relevant university, state, and federal policies, or the resourcefulness to quickly find appropriate policies applicable to complex situations, is essential. Experience with budget management and acumen with numbers is needed. An ability to interpret ambiguous written and verbal questions from faculty, staff, and students, and then to compose a carefully worded cogent written or verbal response, is needed. The individual should earn the trust and respect of multiple stakeholders including staff, students, faculty, and higher-level university officials. The individual should be able to work seamlessly with, and be sensitive to the needs of, faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds. A penchant for rigorous implementation of operational procedures is a must. A passion for continuous improvements to enhance the operational efficiency of the unit would be an added bonus.
Approximate distribution of responsibilities
Operations and Finance (60%)
- Overseeing departmental budget in collaboration with the department head and accountant.
- Overseeing and/or approving departmental spending across various accounts to ensure compliance with relevant policies.
- Serve as the primary financial contact from the department for the College.
- Implement controls and procedures to ensure efficient and responsible use of resources.
- Analyze financial data and generate reports to identify trends and forecast future needs.
- Manage or oversee the external grants pre-award and post-award processes to ensure faculty and researchers are best supported.
- Ensure that departmental records and data are stored, maintained, and protected appropriately.
- Assist the department head for long-range planning and strategic resource allocation.
- Manage regular staff meetings.
- Ensure efficient day-to-day departmental operations by coordinating workflows among the staff.
- Identify and implement improvements in customer service and organizational efficiency.
- Lead or participate in special projects.
- Help with preparing memorandum of understanding or other agreements with external constituents.
- Help/oversee departmental staff to maintain websites, and manage marketing, outgoing communications and departmental social media accounts
Human resources (30%)
- Serve as the primary department resource for University, Collegiate and departmental human resource policies, procedures, and practices
- Coordinate or oversee searches and the onboarding/transition/visa processes for faculty, visiting scholars, and staff.
- Supervise administrative staff including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, performance evaluations, disciplining, and promoting professional development.
- Facilitate the hiring process for all personnel within the department by utilizing the University’s recruiting system and providing appointment letters per University and College guidelines.
- Ensure that all appointments are entered in the payroll system to avoid delayed pay or incorrect payments.
Facilities (5%)
- Serve as the primary building space representative.
- Help the department head in allocating departmental space.
- Ensure a safe environment for students, staff, and faculty, and to implement a building emergency plan.
- Oversee remodeling projects.
- Oversee the acquisition and allocation of capital equipment.
- Oversee door access and key control for departmental spaces.
- Investigate complaints related to facility management issues and oversee their resolution.
Miscellaneous (5%)
- Attend regular Collegiate administrator meetings.
- Serve on Collegiate and University committees as needed.
- Oversee the coordination of, and attend, departmental events such as graduation receptions, orientations, alumni receptions, staff events, etc.
Industrial and Systems Engineering Graduate Program Coordinator
About the Job
The Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC) serves in a key position of graduate program leadership, having a direct impact on graduate student recruitment, admissions, student degree progress, program completion, and quality of experience. The GPC provides primary programmatic and operation support for MS programs such as the MS in Data Science in Operations Research, MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering and PhD program serving approximately 90 graduate students with plans to grow the program. GPC support may also be needed for certificate programs in the future. This position works closely with the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) and the Director of Masters Programs (DMP) and to manage the program, ensuring systems are in place to deliver consistent and efficient services, including developing and supporting a welcoming environment for students from a variety of different backgrounds. This position is a key member of the department administrative team and reports to the ISyE administrative manager.
Graduate Program Coordination (90%)
Graduate Program Support – 25%
- Under general guidance of the Director of Graduate Studies, organize and administer all aspects of the graduate program and handle day-to-day tasks.
- Serve as Plan Level Coordinator for the ISyE graduate programs.
- Assist students with program requirements and milestones, directing students to Director of Graduate Studies as appropriate.
- Responds to all program inquiries, including policy and procedure questions.
- Assist students with program planning strategies, including registration, transitions from other programs, readmission to the program, funding options, tuition waivers, and health Insurance.
- Functions as a liaison with relevant academic departments, programs and units, to include ISSS.
- Participates in policy and program evaluation and review, including preparing analysis and recommendations on new policy or changes in program requirements.
- Consults with students, faculty, departmental administration and the Graduate School as needed.
- Acts as the first point of contact for all inquiries regarding the program. Responds to requests for program information, data, and/or reports from department administration, CSE, the Graduate School and outside entities as needed.
- Annually reviews and updates the department’s Graduate Student Handbook.
- Provides staff support for the Director of Graduate Studies and appropriate committees.
- Provide regular updates to the DGS and Dept. Administrator regarding graduate program affairs.
- Represents the DGS as needed on committees outside the department.
- Manages graduate student roster. Gathers and tracks annual graduate student placement for department and CSE reporting. Maintains data on all aspects of the program including applicants, current students, and alumni.
- Maintains and processes Graduate Faculty Role status with the Graduate School.
- Acts as a resource for faculty, staff, and students on program policy and applicable CSE and Graduate School-level policies.
- Prepare block grant (quality metrics) and other proposals to the Graduate School
- Coordinates the annual review of all graduate students.
- Preparing reports and surveys and providing information to support collegiate and/or department decision-makers.
- Ensure department graduate student files are kept up-to-date for current graduate students and that University records retention policies are followed; also maintain the files through the Graduate School Image Now program.
- Acts as program subject matter expert in systems such as SLATE, PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, Workflow Gen, MyU, Reporting Center, GPAS, CourseDog.
Direct work of Grad student coordinator Teaching Assistant in consultation with DGS.
Admissions – 25%
- Prepares funding letters for accepted students, documenting eligibility requirements, conditions, duties, award type/amount, etc.
- Initiates and facilitates the process for fellowship applications. Coordinates internal departmental nomination process if needed.
- Works with prospective students on program requirements, including application process, campus visits and relocations, registration and funding options.
- Advises international students on specific needs related to the application process.
- Manages admissions process, including application processing and Graduate School application requirements.
- Assists applicants with ApplyYourself system and assists faculty members with the AppReview system.
- Assist prospective graduate students with the entire application process, registration holds, language requirements, and visa process, contacting the graduate school and ISSS as needed.
- Tracks acceptance and rejection of admissions offers and status of waitlist.
Keep a tracking sheet of financial assistantship offers for incoming new graduate students.
Program Advising – 25%
- Monitors student progress. Initiates contact with students and faculty, bringing concerns to the attention of students, faculty advisors, and the DGS as appropriate.
- Maintains student records, processes relevant paperwork.
- Files 3rd-party billing forms for graduate students and works with Dept. Administrator on these forms. Make sure that all forms are filed for CSE and DDF fellowships so students are billed correctly.
- Ensures stipends are processed and required payroll documentation is completed and submitted to the College.
Assists international students with specific needs related to visa status and referrals to the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office, travel, specialized English and classroom training, and full-time enrollment status.
Recruiting/Outreach - 15%
- Carry out promotion plans for academic MS and PhD programs
- Collaborate with Director of Graduate Students for Professional Strategic Communication program about recruitment and promotion strategies and events
- Administer admissions events (open houses, information sessions, networking events, and graduate orientations).
- Connect students to CSE Career Services - Workforce Development opportunities
- Promote Fellowship Opportunities for students (NSF, DOD, NIH)
- Implement Alumni Community database to build networking opportunities for students, employers and donors
Other responsibilities as assigned (10%)
- Support the department head and administrative manager in special projects
- Provide continuity of department administrative support and general department operations when other administrative team members are absent
