Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics/Mechanical Engineering Double Major

The aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering majors are similar in the foundational engineering courses they require and the core technical skills they develop. Many aerospace engineering graduates go on to work in mechanical engineering roles in industries such as automotive, medical devices, and manufacturing. Likewise, many mechanical engineering graduates are hired by aerospace companies such as Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and others.

Students with a strong interest in aerospace engineering who also want a broader background in mechanical engineering may find it worthwhile to pursue a double major. A 4.5-year plan that facilitates completion of both the aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering majors is provided below.

Please note that the 4.5-year double major plan is demanding, with several semesters requiring 18 or more credits. To help manage the workload, we strongly recommend taking summer courses whenever possible. Notes

  • AEM 4601 Instrumentation Lab is covered by ME 4031 Basic Measurements Lab
  • AEM 4301 Orbital Mechanics will count as an ME specialization elective
  • AEM 4602 Aeromechanics Lab will count as a ME4x3x Senior Lab class
  • AEM technical elective requirements are satisfied by ME 2011, ME 4053, and an ME technical elective
  • ME3332 Fluid mechanics is covered by AEM 4201 Fluid Mechanics
  • ME3324 Introduction to Thermal Science (required for AEM students) is covered by ME3331 & ME3333
