Graduate Program

Overview

The UMN Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics produce well-rounded professionals who are ready to pursue successful and rewarding careers in research, industry, or as a university faculty member.

"The AEM department almost feels like a second home. To talk about my experience in the department, I would be remiss not to acknowledge the staff. The staff has been immensely helpful throughout my education, from selecting my first course as an undergrad to applying for graduation."

Maninder Grover, AEM Graduate Student

Each year a new cohort of about 30 students joins the approximately 60 to 80 AEM graduate students already engaged in their studies. The department also sees an average of 30 students complete their degrees and graduate from the programs every year.

With a strong focus on fundamental principles, multidisciplinary learning, and practical application through real-world research projects, our AEM graduate programs create the ideal next step for students with undergraduate degrees in mathematics, physics, or other branches of engineering who wish to further advance their education. Masters students can choose to either pursue coursework only or engage in a curriculum that is more research intensive.

AEM faculty are recognized thought leaders in the aerospace and mechanics fields and omnipresent in the classroom and the lab. Our full-time faculty teach courses throughout the year and at all levels of study. Students have the opportunity to learn from and work with our knowledgeable faculty at the forefront of the aerospace and mechanics fields.
