Short-Term Visitors
Welcome to the William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute (FTPI) at the University of Minnesota!
We are pleased to have to you participate in our Short-Term Visitor program.
Short-term visitors stay between 1 - 14 days. Office space and support is provided by the Institute.
Please contact our faculty if you are interested in visiting in order to give a seminar or for collaboration.

Seminar Speakers
Please book your airfare at least one month out from your talk date. Once you have booked your travel, please let FTPI staff know your travel dates. They will arrange lodging for you near campus. You will be given shared office space within FTPI for the duration of your stay. Please see Alicia in 275-03 or Meghan in 275-21 for your key upon arrival.
Please send your talk title and abstract to seminar organizers or FTPI staff at least one week before talk date.
UMN seminar rooms are equipped with an LCD projector and whiteboard. See the UMN Classroom Equipment User Guide (PDF) for help to navigate the technology in the seminar rooms. If requested, FTPI has an Apple laptop that may be used for your presentation.
Booking a Flight
The closest airport to the William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute is the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport (MSP). It is recommended that you book your flight one month in advance of your visit. Once you book your flight, please let FTPI staff know your travel dates and we will arrange for lodging during your stay.
Getting to the University of Minnesota
Once you land at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport (MSP), you have several options you can take to get to the University of Minnesota (UMN).
Taxi, Uber and Lyft services are available at MSP airport (Uber and Lyft until July 1st). It will take approximately 30 - 60 minutes to get to campus depending on traffic and will cost between $25.00 - $60.00. Shuttle service is available from MSP, however the waits can be long and cost may be high at $20.00 - $73.00 depending on whether you share the ride or travel alone. To learn more see the Van and Shuttle service page of the MSP website.
Car rental is not recommended because Taxi, Uber, and Lyft services are a less expensive option and easily accessible. See below for more travel reimbursement information.
Lodging
Lodging is provided for visitors to the William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute (FTPI).
Once you have confirmed your travel dates, contact staff at FTPI and they will book your lodging for you. Short-term visitors are typically housed at the Graduate Minneapolis or the Days Hotel University. Accommodations further away from campus may be required during busy times of the year.
Getting to FTPI
John T. Tate Hall houses the William I. Fine Theoretical Physics Institute (FTPI). FTPI is located on the 2nd Floor of Tate Hall across the Atrium from the elevators and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The building can be accessed from Church Street (accessibility entrance) and Northrop Mall. Building public hours are 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Travel Reimbursements
The University policy states that "Travelers are expected to choose low-cost options that meets their scheduling and business needs". MSP airport is close to campus. Car rental is not recommended because Uber, Lyft and the Light rail are less expensive and easily accessible. Please contact staff before your trip if you think car rental is necessary or if you have questions about reimbursable expenses.
