AEM Welcomes Associate Professor James Scoggins to Faculty

Sept. 11, 2026

The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics (AEM) is excited to welcome Associate Professor James Scoggins to its faculty this fall 2026 semester.

Before joining AEM, Dr. Scoggins served as a Research Aerospace Engineer in the Aerothermodynamics Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. He earned his PhD in Energy Sciences through a joint program with CentraleSupélec in France and the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics in Belgium. Recognized for his groundbreaking contributions, he received the AIAA Thermophysics Best Paper Award in 2024 and the NASA Langley CIF/IRAD Award in 2025.

Dr. Scoggins's research operates at the cutting edge of computational aerothermodynamics and scientific machine learning, with a focus on high-enthalpy and hypersonic flows. By bridging first-principles modeling with data-driven discovery, his research group develops physics-informed, probabilistic machine learning methods to transform how engineers predict, interpret, and design for extreme flight environments.

“The AEM department has a very strong tradition in areas like hypersonics and aerodynamics,” said Dr. Scoggins. “I look forward to collaborating and building across all the different subdisciplines that exist within the department.”
