AEM Department Launches New Mentorship Program

The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics (AEM) has officially launched its very first Summer Research Mentorship Program (SRMP), a new initiative designed to support and train undergraduate students in advanced research. The program is led by AEM professors Ryan Caverly, Melissa Green, and Tom Schwartzentruber.
Running for 13 weeks from late May through mid-August, SRMP provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in full-time research—approximately 40 hours per week—under the guidance of AEM faculty and graduate student mentors. In addition to hands-on research experience, participants will attend a series of workshops aimed at developing research skills and offering insight into graduate school and career paths.

The program kicked off with its first official meeting on Wednesday, May 28, where undergraduate participants were paired with their graduate student mentors. The student cohort reflects a broad range of academic backgrounds, including multiple majors and a Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) student, highlighting the inclusive and interdisciplinary nature of the program.
At the conclusion of the summer, students will present their work during a poster session, showcasing the results of their research and the progress made throughout the program.
