SIAM Establishes the Ericksen Prize

In June of 2021, Jerald LaVerne Ericksen, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics and the School of Mathematics passed away at the age of 96.

The loss of Dr. Ericksen mobilized his students, friends, colleagues, and family of Dr. Ericksen to raise funds for the creation of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Ericksen Prize.

In the fall of 2022, the prize fund reached its goal, and the first award will be made during the SIAM annual meeting in 2025. The prize will be awarded every five years to any member or members of the scientific community whose research recognizes either a formulation that enables the novel application of mathematical ideas or a formulation that raises new questions in mathematics.

To find more information or to nominate someone, visit the Jerald L. Ericksen Prize page on the SIAM website.

We wish to thank everyone who contributed, and we look forward to celebrating Dr. Ericksen’s contributions as a scientist and teacher through this award.
