Keysight 5500 environmental SPM with optional high-speed force-curve mapping

Main system specifications:

  • Tip-scanned system. Switchable closed-loop / open-loop large scanner (90 x 90 x 8 µm).
  • Pico IC acoustic isolation and controlled-gas chamber. Humidity control 1-95% RH with MTS setpoint/feedback controller; nitrogen purge option.
  • Video access, digital acquisition with software-adjustable contrast/brightness.
  • Sample plates can handle multiple-cm size samples; optional clamping vs magnetic disk mounting. X-Y sample plate displacement micromanipulators, 8 mm in total range.
  • MACIII electronics box (three lock-in amplifiers for multifrequency methods: bi/tri-modal, contact resonance, single-pass EFM/KFM via AM or FM schemes); both acoustic and magnetic (MAC) cantilever excitations possible.
  • BNC breakout box
  • Software Picoview 1.20 providing up to 8 data acquisition channels for imaging, 4 channels in spectroscopy (force curves, etc.). Optional custom scripting with PicoScript (default Python, also supports C/C++, MATLAB, and Labview)
  • Superior force curve and force volume software (for the avid experimentalist): (i) optional collection of successive force curves into single data file, ability to overlay arbitrary force curves from dataset, (ii) dynamic acquisition of force curves while manually moving tip with mouse on conventional image, (iii) optional “scan to point” acquisition of grid (rows of quasistatic or dynamic force curves interlaced with standard imaging modes), (iv) ability to stop and save data cube at any time (do not need to collect complete square array), (v) collect up to four data types in parallel (including optional monitoring of RH and/or T during ramping), (vi) real time overlay of grid of measurement sites on conventional images with mouse-roller-adjustable transparency, (vii) ability to examine individual or sets of force curves selected/deselected from anywhere in mapping domain at any time during acquisition, (viii) Python plug-ins for rendering images of modulus, dissipation, and more in real time as well as offline.
  • Current sensing (conducting AFM) and electrochemistry modes
  • PicoLITH programmable shape scanning for writing applications

Optional accessories:

  • Witec Digital Pulsed Force Mode for adhesion and stiffness imaging in real time, with optional full data cube acquisition combined with novel offline image-rendering algorithms (e.g., dissipation)
  • Attachable Bruker/Anasys nanoTA/SThM system to rapidly heat special tips up to hundreds of degrees (e.g., for local glass transition or melting temperature determination) or imaging of thermal conductivity
  • open-loop small scanner (8 x 8 x 3 µm) for highest lateral resolution (lowest noise floor)
  • Sample temperature stages, -30 to 250° C: optional heating (to 250° C) or Peltier (-30 to +35° C) stages. Lakeshore controller for stepping or linear ramping of temperature.
  • Open liquid cells including both standard Keysight and customized 3rd-party designs (larger, teflon)
  • Cryo-microtomy for cross sectioning samples. Double-D clamp for mounting faced samples for AFM. (Optional floating of thin-section samples onto flat substrates.)
  • HP function generator for custom modulation (e.g., shear) and ramping (e.g., setpoint) experiments.
  • Attachable LabView station provides virtual instruments such as oscilloscope, digital signal analyzer, strip chart recorder.
  • Custom PicoScript for automatic stepping of Z motor to accommodate sample expansion (heating runs)
