CSE-IT Out Of Support Operating System Upgrades

Feb. 7, 2025

Overview

As we approach End Of Life for operating systems running on CSE-IT managed machines, CSE-IT will be starting a concentrated effort to upgrade any machines running such an OS to a more recent and supported version.

This is done not only so CSE-IT can provide current software, but because those systems no longer receive security patches. This is disallowed by the university at large as it can compromise multiple systems.

Who Is Affected

Anyone running Ubuntu version 20.04 or earlier. Ubuntu 20.04 will reach end of life on May 31st, 2025. Machines running this version should be upgraded to the current version before that date.

Required Action

Anyone running Ubuntu version 20.04 or earlier must contact the CSE-IT Helpdesk and schedule an upgrade at their convenience before May 31st, 2025.

Systems that have not been scheduled for an upgrade will have an upgrade date selected for them. All efforts will be made to reach the owners and users of such systems to coordinate this date.

What happens if a machine does not get upgraded before the final deadline?

Machines that are not upgraded will be disconnected from the network. Access will not be restored without an upgrade. Users will have to contact CSE-IT ro resolve this.
