Ubuntu 24.04 Upgrade Announcement

CSE-IT will be upgrading all CSELABS Linux systems to Ubuntu 24.04 for the Fall 2024 semester. This is the latest Long Term Supported version of Ubuntu and will be the latest supported version for the next two years.

Ubuntu 24.04 contains updates to many included software packages, as well as UI/UX updates and tweaks. A very small number of software packages will no longer be available as they are old and deprecated and were not updated for this version. No functionality will be lost.

One change that has been implemented is that CSE-IT now recommends that Python users create virtual environments for any Python project. More about this can be found in the Python Availability on Linux news article.

Users with standalone workstations will not be upgraded automatically. Please contact CSE-IT at csehelp@umn.edu to schedule an upgrade. Note that users who are currently using version 20.04 should upgrade as soon as possible, as Ubuntu 20.04 will reach end-of-life early next year.

Machines in the KH-1250 have already been upgraded to Ubuntu 24.04 – please use those to test any class requirements.

For any questions or comments, please contact csehelp@umn.edu.
