AEM hosts prospective grad students

Earlier this spring, 15 prospective graduate students admitted to Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics (AEM) programs for Fall 2023 were invited to visit, learn more about, and tour the department. The students, representing University of Iowa, University of Missouri, Hanover College, UMD, SUNY Buffalo, University of Wisconsin, University of St. Thomas, and US Air Force, along with six current gophers, were welcomed by AEM Director of Graduate Studies Ryan Elliott who provided a brief history and context of the department and its role within the College of Science and Engineering, the U of M, the state of Minnesota, and U.S.

Students spent the day meeting with AEM faculty in the Systems, Solid Mechanics & Materials, and Fluid Mechanics research areas. Faculty members provided overviews of the exciting research being performed in AEM and gave tours of AEM labs and facilities. Prospective students were treated to lunch in the Akerman Hall Hangar where they met and mingled with current AEM graduate students and department faculty.

Later that afternoon, students had the opportunity to meet individually with AEM faculty to discuss specific research projects and the AEM educational experience and culture. The prospective students ended their day with a dinner at Sally's Saloon where they were able to socialize with each other and current AEM graduate students.
