AEM Wind Tunnels

The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at the University of Minnesota has two cutting-edge and historically significant wind tunnels: the larger closed return tunnel and the smaller open return tunnel. The department's two wind tunnels used for instruction and research are located in 430 Akerman Hall. These wind tunnels are utilized by students, faculty, and external collaborators.

The tunnels are used by students in Flight Dynamics and Control (AEM 4303), Aeromechanics Lab (AEM 4602), and Senior Design (AEM 4333), as well as through various student groups. Faculty use the wind tunnels for diverse research projects. Additionally, external collaborators locally and nationally use the tunnels to test a variety of models.

Closed Return Tunnel

With the larger test section and an axially-mounted sting, the closed return tunnel is often used to test more intricate models. The tunnel's removable ports and dual test sections allow for more complicated model installation. Flow visualization via smoke generator is also utilized in this tunnel.

Open Return Tunnel

The open return tunnel has a higher maximum speed and a transverse-mounted sting. Due to the fact that the tunnel's diffuser opens to the room, it can also be used as a larger test section.
