Mission

New Directions in Rock Magnetism

The Institute for Rock Magnetism (IRM) was established in the fall of 1990 as a National Multi-User Facility whose core mission is to serve the greater geomagnetic community by providing access to state-of-the-art facilities and technical expertise, and by encouraging visiting researchers in their studies of important new topics in rock magnetism and related interdisciplinary fields. In addition, the IRM is committed to:

  • Improving the quality of education and enriching the intellectual environment of the University and the State of Minnesota;
  • Providing an international meeting place for researchers of magnetism to exchange and develop ideas;
  • Exploring fundamental questions at the frontiers of modern mineral magnetism;
  • Developing links to other science and engineering research disciplines, to the industrial research sector, and to other academic fields.

Decades of Scientific Contribution and Collaboration

The Institute for Rock Magnetism was founded through the generous support of the National Science Foundation's Earth Science Division, the W. M. Keck Foundation, and the University of Minnesota. The passion of the researchers at the IRM has won the support of many distinguished members of the national and international science community, many of whom have agreed to serve as members of the IRM's Research Advisory Committee. The vitality of the Institute has been maintained and promoted through the assistance of the NSF-EAR and the University of Minnesota.
