Suo Yang Elected to AIAA Class of 2027 Associate Fellows

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is proud to announce that Professor Suo Yang has been selected as a member of the Class of 2027 AIAA Associate Fellows by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), the world’s largest aerospace technical society.

The grade of Associate Fellow recognizes individuals "who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work or who have done original work of outstanding merit." Only 17 percent of AIAA members are ever selected for this grade. Candidates must be AIAA Senior Members with at least 12 years of professional experience and be recommended by three AIAA members. The Class of 2027 comes from 7 countries and 42 U.S. states.

Prof. Yang was recognized "for his research leadership in multi-physics modeling of turbulent reacting/multiphase flows, his commitment to mentoring the next generation of rocket scientists and sustained technical stewardship."

Prof. Yang is a nationally recognized rising star and leader in the U.S. aerospace propulsion and energy community. His career is defined by transforming complex multi-physics modeling of turbulent reacting/multiphase flows into actionable combustion/fuel-based technology for high-speed, highly efficient, low-emission and low-noise aerospace systems. Prof. Yang has established himself as a technical leader whose work directly impacts both defense and commercial sectors.

Within AIAA, Prof. Yang has been serving as the Technical Discipline Chair (TDC) of High-Speed Air-Breathing Propulsion (HSABP), and was serving as the TDC of Plasma-Dynamics & Lasers (PDL), both for the AIAA SciTech Forums. Alongside his research, Prof. Yang has built a student talent pipeline that has produced two winners of the AIAA Martin Summerfield Propellants & Combustion Graduate Award, given to only one student per year globally.
