Curriculum for MS-A Degree
The MS Plan A is a thesis-based degree intended for students interested in advanced study and research in mechanical engineering. Students develop an individualized course plan in consultation with their research adviser, record their plan in the Graduate Planning and Audit System (GPAS), and complete a master’s thesis.
The degree requires 30 total credits, including:
- Two core courses selected from the department’s foundational areas:
- Controls and system dynamics
- Design and manufacturing
- Fluid mechanics
- Reacting systems
- Thermodynamics and heat transfer
- At least 10 credits at the 8000 level within the College of Science and Engineering
- One graduate-level mathematics course
- One research and professional ethics course
- One or two graduate seminar credits
Students may also apply up to six credits toward a designated minor, subject to university and program requirements. The course plan must be approved and recorded in the Graduate Planning and Audit System (GPAS).
