Suo Yang Selected for Inaugural AIAA 30/30 Recognition Program
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is proud to announce that Professor Suo Yang has been selected as a recipient of the inaugural AIAA 30/30 Recognition Program, which honors 30 young professionals in their 30s, who embody excellence and innovation across the aerospace sector. Recipients were chosen by AIAA’s technical community across seven disciplines, including Propulsion and Energy, for the rigor and impact of their work.
Prof. Yang is a leader in aerospace propulsion research, bridging fundamental multi-physics modeling with actionable technologies for high-speed, high-efficiency, low-emission, and low-noise flights. He has received 5 Young Investigator/Faculty/Fellowship awards from DARPA, ONR, and AFOSR.
His research breakthroughs include pioneering 3D CFD simulation capability of turbulent plasma-assisted ignition for scramjets, first-principled phase-change modeling of hypersonic shock-droplet interaction for multiphase detonation, CFD simulation-based propulsion control system development & testing, and the discovery of micro-jet structures that govern oblique detonation wave stability (a finding now transitioning into Mach 9+ flight testing). His predictive models and accelerated robust algorithms have been directly adopted by industry, including Rolls-Royce and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, to optimize next-generation engines.
Within AIAA, Prof. Yang serves as the Technical Discipline Chair (TDC) of High-Speed Air-Breathing Propulsion (HSABP) for the AIAA SciTech Forums in 2026 and 2027, served as the TDC of Plasma-Dynamics and Lasers (PDL) for the AIAA SciTech Forum 2024, and has mentored 2 students who have won the AIAA Martin Summerfield Propellants and Combustion Graduate Award.
Recipients of the 30/30 Recognition Program are featured in the October–December 2026 issue of Aerospace America and receive a year of AIAA membership, free registration to an AIAA forum or event in 2027, and access to mentoring and peer networking opportunities. Prof. Yang will be recognized in person at the Awards Ceremony of the AIAA SciTech 2027 Forum.
