UNITE Homework, Exams, Presentations and Colloquia

Once a student is enrolled into a UNITE section of a course, UNITE will send instructions, information, and updates directly to the student's University email account.

Exams and Homework

UNITE Student Expectations

The Welcome to UNITE email (sent to students prior to the start of the semester) will include detailed exam and proctoring guidelines. The Welcome email will also include an Exam Planning form which must be completed at the beginning of the semester.

  1. Exams and homework are due on the same date and at the same time as the on-campus section. Homework is handled electronically.

  2. If your course is conducting paper-based exams, identify a proctor who will be physically present to monitor your exams. You will schedule exam appointments directly with the proctor and UNITE will handle exam submissions.

  3. You are required to take exams on the same date/time as the on-campus section. If you wish to reschedule an exam, forward instructor approval to [email protected]. Instructors are not obligated to amend a scheduled exam for you.

  4. Instructor permission is required to take exams on campus with the on-campus section. You are not guaranteed a seat in the classroom as this is typically a physical classroom space issue. Forward instructor approval to [email protected].

  5. It's your responsibility to follow the course syllabus and exam schedule. If your Exam Planning form is not submitted at the beginning of the semester, we will assume our support is not needed for exams.

  6. Enrollment through UNITE is limited to students who are located in the United States during the semester for which they are registering. Short-term travel during the semester will require instructor and UNITE approval in the event of exams. Proctored exams outside of the United States are not allowed.

EXAMS and PROCTORS:

For paper-based exams, students must submit a proctor who meets policy requirements for administrative review. Proctors using an email address such as @gmail.com, @yahoo.com, @hotmail.com are not accepted.

Please note we are unable to submit an exam to proctors more than one week prior to an exam date. Double-check with your proctor that this is acceptable. Many instructors are unable to submit exams to UNITE earlier than a week so your proctor should be made aware.

How to use a Proctor for Paper-based Exams

When you submit your proctor information, UNITE will contact them directly to verify. After the instructor sends the exam to UNITE, we will forward the exam and instructions to the proctor - not to the student.

A Proctor Must be able to:

  • Verify student identity by checking a valid photo ID
  • Be physically present and able to account for student actions during the exam; the proctor may allow student access to a computer so they can view a live stream of the on-campus exam in the event that there are questions or updates to the exam.
  • Schedule an appropriate room for the quiz/exam
  • Use the UNITE Proctor Exam Cover Sheet when submitting completed  exams
  • Print exam and scan when exam is completed AdobeScan app creates an easily  readable high contrast PDF. The Notes app on iPhones includes a scanning option.

Courses with Exams Not Requiring Live, In-Person Proctoring

Some instructors may prefer to conduct alternative assessments such as take-home exams, remote exams conducted through Honorlock or Canvas, or may not require exams. If an instructor chooses these alternative assessments, they will handle exams, not UNITE. In these situations, a live proctor and UNITE's support is not needed. An in-person proctor is only needed for paper-based exams.

More details about exam/quiz proctoring is in the UNITE Student Guide (available only to UMN-TC internet IDs - this link opens in a new window).

Live Student Presentations

For courses with required live presentations by students - individually or as a group - UNITE will work with the student(s) and instructor to provide a live webconference between the remote student(s) and the classroom in real time.  In some instances, UNITE-enrolled students are able to join the on-campus students in the classroom to present in person (though that is not required).

For courses with required, live presentations it is best to note that commitment for the course with the instructor before the 100% refund period ends.

Seminar and Colloquia Attendance

Attendance for students who enroll in departmental seminars and colloquia through UNITE for credit is automatically tracked for the seminar coordinators and TAs, for their use.
