Design for Life: Water in Tanzania (ME 4583)
Seminar description
Access to reliable clean water is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity today. The College of Science and Engineering offers a global seminar experience that brings a group of students to Tanzania during winter break. Students receive a hands-on engineering challenge with real-world impact.
During this program, student teams will evaluate community needs and infrastructure to model potable water-handling systems in the beautiful southern highlands regions of Tanzania. Student proposals will be evaluated by a St. Paul non-profit organization with the funding and resources in place to take approved projects to the next level.
The seminar will include a cultural and geographical introduction to Tanzania, its land, and people, as well as a trip to Ruaha National Park, one of the world’s most famous safari destinations.

Term: Winter break 2024-25
Travel dates: Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025-Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025
Eligible students: Open to upper-division CSE students. Admission is by application.
Application deadline: Monday, July 1, 2024 (The online application will be available soon!)
Credit: Students will receive three credits for ME 4583. This course also fulfills Liberal Education themes Global Perspectives and Technology and Society
Estimated program fee: The program fee includes three credits, round-trip airfare, housing, excursions, international health insurance, and group meals. Total costs have not yet been finalized, but are estimated to be between $6,300 and $6,800. Contact the CSE International Programs team for more information.
