Tuition and Fees

UNITE Distributed Learning is a self-supporting unit within the College of Science and Engineering.  Students enrolling in courses through UNITE pay a UNITE Special Fee for UNITE services in addition to regular tuition and fees assigned to a taking a course. Note that students who enroll only in courses through UNITE and take no other courses from the University in the same semester pay the in-state tuition rate for that semester.

Fees are subject to change without notice; the University's tuition rate is typically announced in July for the upcoming academic year (Fall-Spring-Summer cycle).

Graduate and Undergraduate Tuition

Tuition amounts are the same for students taking the class for A-F, Pass/Fail, or Audit grading.

Undergraduate tuition is based on both the 13-credit policy (for University of Minnesota degree-seeking students) and residency.

UNITE Special Fee

UNITE Distributed Learning is a self-supporting office at the University of Minnesota. In order to operate, we must charge a UNITE Special Fee in addition to tuition and other University of Minnesota fees.

This fee covers administrative, technical and maintenance costs of running the program. This fee will be charged directly to students and appear on your University billing.

The fee is $100 per credit for A-F or S-N grading.  Students choosing to audit also pay the $100 per credit UNITE Special Fee.

University of Minnesota and College Fees

These are University and College fees common to students who enroll in courses at the University of Minnesota.  Additionally, there are other fees which may apply based on individual enrollment (by college admission, status, etc.).  

This is by no means a complete list of fees that the University of Minnesota and Colleges assess - refer to the University of Minnesota OneStop Fees for a more complete list of University and College fees to determine what fees may apply to your enrollment.  

University-Sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP)

Beginning fall semester 2012, all students who are 1) admitted to a degree program, and 2) registered for six or more credits per semester (or three or more credits during summer term) that count toward the automatic assessment of the Student Services Fee, are required by the University of Minnesota to have health plan coverage. Students who meet both of these criteria are automatically enrolled in the University-Sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan.

• Note that UNITE credits are among those credits EXCLUDED from the automatic assessment of the Student Services Fee that triggers the automatic enrollment into the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan (see criterion number 2, above);
• If you are enrolled in both UNITE and non-UNITE courses, you may be automatically enrolled into the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan based on your enrollment in non-UNITE courses;
• Students taking only UNITE credits each semester which are excluded from the Student Services Fee for the entirety of their academic career are not be eligible for the SHBP;
• Students registering for credits - in this case, UNITE credits - that result in the loss of eligibility may CONTINUE coverage for one semester.  This provision is available once in an academic career.  The student must have been enrolled on the plan while taking six eligible credits the previous semester.  See the Office of Student Health Benefits 2020-21 Student Health Benefit Plan (page 7) for more complete information;

The official University policy is that all Student Services Fee-paying University students will be automatically enrolled in the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan and billed a non-refundable semester coverage fee.

To avoid being charged, students who have active health plan coverage that meets certain existing coverage requirements may request to waive the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan by 1) completing a waiver request and 2) providing proof of insurance.

Approved waivers will be valid for two years. If the credits for which you are registering meet the eligibility requirement and you DO NOT submit a waiver request by the posted deadline, you will be responsible for the cost of the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan.

College of Science and Engineering: Collegiate Fee

All students admitted to the College of Science and Engineering will be charged the College of Science and Engineering Collegiate Fee (AY 2023-24 information listed here, subject to change by the college; see the OneStop Fees Information).

• $330 - 6+ credits in a semester (Fall and Spring)
• $165 - fewer than 6 credits in a semester (Fall and Spring)
• $165 - 3+ credits (Summer only)
• $82.50 - fewer than 3 credits (Summer only)

College of Science and Engineering: Undergraduate Tuition Surcharge

All undergraduate students admitted to the College of Science and Engineering will be charged the College of Science and Engineering Undergraduate Surcharge (AY 2023-24 information listed here, subject to change by the college; see the OneStop Fees Information).

• $1,300 - 9 or more credits per semester 
• $130/credit - 1-8 credits per semester

Payment

At the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, the UNITE office makes adjustments before the first bill is due. If you have questions please contact our office. We will not be able to make any changes after the last week of class. You are responsible for paying all fees by the University's deadlines, we can not waive any late fees if you do not pay by their dates.

Student Accounts Receivable Billing System for Tuition and Fees

The University of Minnesota uses electronic billing and payment of your student account bills (tuition, fees, housing, books, etc.).

The electronic billing and payment system will automatically send an e-mail notification to the student's University e-mail address when the bill is ready to be viewed online. Students will need their University Internet ID and password to login to the online payment system. Students will need to set up an authorized payer through the online Parent/Guest Access application to grant access for another person to view and pay their bill.

Accessing and Paying Your Bill

You will view and pay your University bill through OneStop's Billing & Payment with your University Internet ID and password. You may view the current bill plus any electronic bills created in the past.

Paying by mail is still possible. You can print out a bill to pay by mail, but must be received and processed by the due date to avoid a late fee.

Refunds

You may find it necessary to withdraw from all classes during a semester. If you withdraw from the University, you may be eligible to receive a refund of tuition and course fees depending upon when you withdraw.

Student Complaint Resolution

Higher-education offices delivering courses by distance education are required to provide contact information for official entities or agencies within each state designated to handle complaint resolution.
