Event Horizon Telescope: Observations, Implications, and Prospects
The Event Horizon Telescope project has enabled horizon-scale imaging of the black hole in M87. I will describe some of the key features of the resulting image, list some of the main conclusions that can be drawn about the physical nature of the putative black hole and its surroundings, and describe prospects for the next generation of EHT observations.

Gammie is part of the collaboration that obtained the first image of a black hole, using Event Horizon Telescope observations of the center of the galaxy M87. The image shows a bright ring formed as light bends in the intense gravity around a black hole that is 6.5 billion times more massive than the Sun.
